Does being at the top of a roller coaster scare you, just before it goes down? What kind of heights scare you?

Does being at the top of a roller coaster scare you, just before it goes down? What kind of heights scare you?

No. I never was. They can be thrilling but not scary, unless the situation feels unsafe.
I've done some rock climbing and jumped off cliffs into water.
The tallest building I've been in is the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.
In my early teens, my dad's friend took us up in his Piper Tri-pacer several times. Both front seats had controls and he taught me how to make turns, do wing overs and simple stalls. He even taught me how to shoot touch and goes (land and then take off without stopping). And he let me fly left seat a few times.
I've been up in quite a few private aircraft.
In my early 40s, a friend gave me a ride in his Folland Gnat, a 1960s era jet fighter. He actually had a hot-dog test pilot take me up. That guy gave me a crazy ride.

And for my 60th birthday, my wife surprised me with a ride in an open cockpit, bi-wing, Stearman airplane. The pilot did aerobatics for me. My wife knew that was something on my bucket list.
I'm RESPECTFUL of heights but do not fear them.
I spent years installing satellite TV systems, eventually moving from residential to commercial. That's how, for example, I happened to be on the roof of the Hyatt Regency hotel in San Francisco, where I took some pictures of the (once again) rotating former-restaurant.

More than a decade ago, I left the satellite business and went into Audio/Video Integration, and I do both residential and commercial projects. Sometimes we do things like run network/camera cabling across the ceilings of warehouses (in this case, a coffee roasting factory), which has 32' high ceilings, requiring the use of a larger sissor lift.

We also run a lot of cables during construction/remodeling, so we're on ladders and scaffolding all the time:

Probably nothing tops having to climb the OUTSIDE of fire escapes going up 6 or 7 stories in San Francisco to run cables between two buildings when there's a building in between that you can't get access to. Me and another guy had to climb these fire escape ladders on the outside, because we were holding onto the ends of a bundle of 4 wires, which weighted probably 60 pounds, but was also a tangling hazard, and if either of us let go, the cable would fall to the ground and we'd have to climb all the way down and start over again.
So, I'm pretty good at dealing with heights.
I lived two months in a flat on 34th floor. At beginning I was afraid even to watch out of the window but after a while this height didn't bother me. Height of second or third floor or height of a bridge don't impress me since then
That depends on the risk of falling. I would not be afraid to walk that narrow ledge if three feet off the ground. But in that situation, I would be terrified.
That is a good point. The fool is the one who asks, "What can go wrong?"
I actually love the thrill of heights! 🎢 Roller coasters are exhilarating, and that moment at the top is pure adrenaline. While I enjoy high places like the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas, sometimes the initial look down can be a bit heart-pounding. However, the art of facing fears is itself quite an exciting journey that I embrace. 😊

I cannot put in words my feelings if I were on that ledge. I think i would just jump to get it over with because the anticipation of when I'm going to fall would be to much. For some reason when I see the inevitable (I would fall) i don't wait for it to get me. I control my life so I'm jumping not falling. I hate heights.
It's not the jump that kills you. It's that sudden stop at the end.
I am afraid of heights, but I've learned to deal with it. If I know I am secure, I'm fine. For example, holding onto the railing. Roller coaster heights never bother me... because I feel secure in the car and know that the ride will be over... too soon.
I sort of get that twisty feeling in my stomach when I look down from really high heights... not sure if that is fear or just the same feeling I get from spinning around in circles to make myself dizzy. Emotions are not exactly my strong suit, so ya know. Maybe that's fear. I get it in the middle of some amusement park rides too. I just blame the twist in my stomach feeling on the G-force of the ride... same feeling though.
Yes, very much so. I get dizzy.
Well, people that do shit like that Las Vegas thing are dense. It's a wonder they've lived this long. And how did that guy get out on that ledge? Did he walk out there or is that just picture manipulation?
I'm sure it's the latter as he didn't have a parachute on.
Not as long as I feel safe. Climbing the Eiger north face would not be on my itinerary!
Nor mine. 😲
Never have been. When I was a kid I was always climbing stuff. Even now, I always have the desire to do it for fun, but being an adult can be limiting in some ways. You shouldn't care what people am think, but judgment and consequences are unavoidable if you do some things in public that others consider immature or stupid.
I would take a job fixing or building stuff at extreme heights if the pay was decent.
Depends on the situation I guess. If I'm suddenly thrust into the position where I have to be hanging over a balcony 6 floors up I'm not comfortable. If; however, I have planned a skydive where I'm going a mile up in the air with an instructor I feel pretty comfortable I think.
@NoDecision Not really, as I have made several jumps from 2500 feet from aircraft.
That said, I was a bit nervous looking over the high railing at the top floor of the Eiffel Tower, and that is 1000 feet
No, but I do have a very strong common sense gut instinct.
What does that do for you? Gut in like puking, or gut like in gut instinct?
For me I ride motorcycles.. but not for speed, for the love of precision, challenge and adventure. So I would enjoy these suggestions. With safety equipment.
No, I can go up no problem. I can climb no problem. But looking down is the problem, the depths. Fear of depths.
That's what they always say, you are ok unless you look down.
@NoDecision do you ever think to yourself if you have such a fear, that you'd prefer someone in your life aka a future partner who shares your view on heights or I'm misreading here lol
@NicholasRedone Well if he shared my fears neither of us would ever do anything. I mean some people are scared to even leave their house.
@NoDecision you too the words and phrases i have used except ; actually I'd like a like minded partner. That way she and I wouldn't have to, where possible, go near heights if it can be helped :) where possible
@NoDecision some would say like mindedness is either a curse or it brings you even closer as a couple to "lean on me" 😉✋🏻👋🏻 hand in hand 👏🏻👌🏻
@NoDecision it sure beats belittling or constantly being told to grow up / man up / face fears - especially if "I'm sensitive" and that goes for either me her us etc lol 😆
I've developed a fear of heights as I got older but that's for ladders, not coasters or skydiving
Ladders? How tall a ladder do you have?
30' to 2nd story roof to clean gutters
After seeing all the ladder prat falls on YouTube I would not like climbing that high on a ladder. 😲
I can do roller coasters and airplanes but looking down on a cliff or a really high building is a no for me dawg
Then you wouldn't like that roller coaster.
I have no idea what's going on with that roller coaster do they get shot up into the air with nothing attached or is it a pirate ship like roller coaster if that's the case I'll like it
No it's just on top of a tall building and there is nothing beneath you but air in some places.
@NoDecision Yes. Extremely. My heart begins to race and I have a panic attack. I will do everything that I can to avoid it.
@debbiedenise I hear that Debbie :(
@NicholasRedone you too?
@debbiedenise formally diagnosed 2021, always knew I had acrophobia 😨 Ferris wheel especially 🎡
@NicholasRedone I get it.
@debbiedenise you must handle it pretty well being much older than me, :) that's inspiring
@NicholasRedone thank you.
@debbiedenise was it critical to you or is it just me to have a partner equally scared of heights?
@debbiedenise thunder buddies 🌩️⚡ 🧸
@NicholasRedone yes my partner is as well.
@debbiedenise well done Debbie and that rhymes because I for one also would mate select selectively like that - :) are you both the same handedness too? Even if you're not like me, lefties rejoice ✋🏻👌🏻
As long as I feel secure. Heights don’t bother me. But as I age. I guess I am more cautious and less daring.
Having done a parachute jump, should hopefully answer your question. x
Nope. I've jumped out of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft at night. I've climbed mountains. And I've jumped off an 800 ft cliff on skis. What I have is a healthy respect for gravity. And an addiction to adrenaline.
Heights are my Kryptonite, haha.
I do fine with being on planes, etc, but ladders, roofs, balconies…. not my thing🙅♂️
Still have never climbed a tree in my life, lmao
No, I’ve never really been afraid of that. Maybe being short makes it so I’m used to “heights”, lol
I think it's a normal fear for animals that can't fly.
100 percent yes 😨 😨 😨 🫦 : crikey 👀 👀 👀 - and how I live my life to the present and ongoing is, I try to avoid stimuli that makes me unpleasant 😬😉
And even then "if I had to" - I'd try to live in an apartment or a hotel as closest as possible to "the ground floor" if not the ground floor if it weren't a lobby with no rooms in a lobby sigh
@NoDecision are you afraid of heights? I certainly have acrophobia - finally got a doctor to formally diagnosed it a few years ago
I'm more afraid of falling than I am of heights.
I’m a union ironworker so if I was I’d be out of a job. So being at great heights is just another day at the office.
I'm not scared of heights. Heights make me extremely dizzy & unsteady thought.
Only if I don’t have anything securing me , then yes I would be afraid lol
I've gone skydiving several times so not afraid of heights. But I am also not reckless, so I don't do stupid things like hop from rooftop to rooftop.
I used to be afraid of heights but I overcame the fear. I love roller coasters. Being on that cliff would scare the shit out of me, not for the height but for the sudden stop if I fell
I hate heights, I think I'd rather have people trying to kill me. At least I can fight them. You can't fight a 1000 foot fall down the mountain
Always sought for an adrenaline rush never bothered me. It’s quite liberating actually once you are up there regardless the venue from mountain calls, paragliding, skydives to parkour runs on urban roof tops.
The first photo scared me so much
I wouldn't walk out there. 🤢
Not really unless I don’t feel secure on where I’m standing
Ok, yes, those pictures terrify me. I was in the CN Tower, glass floor was ridiculous!
I am not super afraid of heights but in that situation demonstrated on your picture I wouldn't do that because that's needlessly dangerous
In my younger age I was afraid but not now
Why, did you turn blind? 🤔
OK 👍🏼
none of them really... I'm game for it
Nope. I'm afraid of widths.
How does that work? 🤔
they scare me but that's the fun lol
Nope. I actually love heights.
For being a man with answers, someone loving heights was unexpected. 😯
Ég hefði frekar viljað nafnið mitt á íslensku. Á þeim tíma leyfði GAG ekki stafina sem þurfti til að stafsetja mig -so- Ich habe mich für Deutsch entschieden.
Am I afraid of heights? Nope. I love the sense of excitement I receive from them. I love the views from upon high.
And firmly, right?
I have skydived a few times too. Nothing firm there. Loved it! Feels like being pushed up till you pull the rip cord.
Yes i do
@itsannalee really? You afraid of heights? Me too 😄😛
Yeah like glass floors in skyscrapers
They got a glass floored walkway over a canyon someplace. I forget where. I don't think I would want to take that view.
No I’m afraid of going splat
I am if we are meant to fly we have wings.
Wait, don't pigs fly? 🐷
I fly with no problem….
@nawtee_me I can fly too, for about 3 feet before I crash.
I take it flying down to earth?
Yes , extremely
Yep I am. Above 3m I already feel uneasy.
Big yesssss
Yes, I am.
@loveyouoak ditto here
Yes and no
How can you be both?
depends on what the height is about
Try wearing high heels some time and see if they make you dizzy. 🤔 That will be a good starting place.
K...
J/K you. 😜
Yes totally
Same
Yes a bit
No, not at all.
Nope I love it
Nope
I do very much.
