For context:
Justin McLeod, founder and former CEO of Hinge, has raised $18 million for a new dating company called Overtone. The project is backed by Match Group, FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital.
Overtone describes itself as a voice- and audio-focused matchmaking service powered by AI. Unlike traditional dating apps, it will not revolve around public profiles, endless swiping, algorithmic feeds or managing multiple matches and conversations at once.
Instead, Overtone plans to learn about users through their voices and personal stories, then make a small number of carefully selected introductions. Its recommendations will be based on relationship science and reflection, with explanations for why two people may be compatible.
The idea responds to growing frustration with conventional dating apps. A 2024 Forbes Health survey found that 78% of users experienced dating-app burnout, despite spending an average of 51 minutes per day on them.
While many dating platforms use AI to write prompts or improve profiles, Overtone intends to use AI mainly for identifying strong matches, rather than replacing real conversations or emotional connection.
Similar services, including Ditto and Date Drop, are also experimenting with AI-guided matchmaking instead of swipe-based browsing. Overtone is expected to launch later this year in selected locations. Relationship expert Esther Perel has joined its board alongside Match CEO Spencer Rascoff and leadership adviser Diana Chapman.

first, I should say that I have no experience whatsoever with online dating apps, but... with AI involved... and the times in which both, audio and video can be heavily modified... I really don't see how could this be any better
AI is and it is going to be algorithms that can be tricked and manipulated... and people will learn to trick, manipulate and "serve" the algorithm for a gain...
