Question Context:
So I heard about, you know.. a shooting, but I seen the responder (the only legal official at the scene, at the time) keeping his hands pressed on the chest of the individual, who was:

bleeding out, due to a chest wound.

He appeared to lose consciousness and I assume, was entering or entered cardiac arrest?

I asked my dad, who was an N. Y. Emt, what would’ve been the priority in that moment. It also has been many years since he has done this work, and for once- I felt genuinely unprepared- should I behold such a situation.

If you saw a person bleeding out, 🩸 (from their chest), but seemed to just about to go into cardiac arrest-

would you perform C. P. R? 🫀

or

apply pressure to their wound, and hope they didn’t go into cardiac arrest? 😬🥶

The tough thing about this scenario, is that one issue demands the flow of oxygen, which would be accompanied by blood flow,

And yet-

The other issue demands containing the blood, as much as possible.

but I would assume that the brain still needs oxygen, no matter what... and the heart needs stimulation as well.. so I would go for that

bleeding out it's less complicated to survive, I believe... lol

Assuming the bleeding is severe, I think I'd stop the bleeding. A think a person will last longer without a heartbeat than they will with severe bleeding. They can also be recovered more easily from a stopped heart. With severe loss of blood it's all over.

I was certified in first aid a long time ago. We never got into this scenario, but we were taught that stopping bleeding is the highest priority. I seem to remember that they had less than a minute to live with severe bleeding. I think it was ten minutes if they aren't breathing. We never covered cardiac arrest though.

That was over 50 years ago, so I could be totally remembering wrong. Back then they didn't even teach CPR. That term hadn't come into use yet.

Plugging chest wound. Blood can be leaking out, and you'll see it- but air can be leaking out too. No point in chest compressions if there's a spare hole in his bag.

All bleeding stops eventually.

Take my shirt off, ball it up and apply it to everywhere where it was bleeding in the chest, then do cpr - hoping that my shirt would absorb the blood keeping it into the body at least covering it. I could be wrong but that’s my 2 cents.

Apply pressure first, then check for a pulse in the neck. If it looks like a bullet wound I'd ask my wife for a tampon to help stop the bleeding - that was their original use.

Haha. My mom works with kids so they have to take classes practicing it 2-3 times a year every year. I’d love a refresher course. Bt our teacher was so annoying. He would get so mad if we couldnt do it right. I passed the class and the physical exam bt failed the written exam so i didn't get certified.
