Swedes are a much loved British vegetable. You can boil them, roast them, mash them, stick them in soups and casseroles. There's great recipes such as the Scottish neeps n tatties or the welsh stwnsh rwdan.

The name is a contraction of Swedish turnip to distinguish them from proper turnips, but many people insist on calling them turnips and it's easier just to play along to avoid confusion. In fact, they've numerous names in the UK, neeps, snadgers, snaggers, rwden and swêd but for some odd reason Americans call them rutabaga which makes no sense.

Better still at Halloween, you can carve them into jack o lanterns, pop a candle in, and stink out the entire neighbourhood for a week.

So imagine my shock and horror to learn one of you lot has never experienced the joy of swedes?

Perhaps he's not the only one. So do you like this vegetable or have you never eaten one?
