What can we do to be content with life and what life has to offer so that when our time comes we can be proud of how we left the world?

-Firstly, the world itself could care less how you leave it and even your undertaker does not know your name…
Perhaps, a Biblical worldview involving Mercy, Holy, Grace, Love, Goodness, and Wrath would be a legacy worth leaving.
-If one is In Christ Jesus, redeemed via Savior and Lord…if at this place then one can walk in the Spirit of the above Attributes.
—When’s the last time you:
-did not give someone what was deserved❓Mercy is not getting what one deserves.
-giving another what is undeserved or unearned (Grace In Jesus the Christ)❓
-giving up what’s the most dear to you for the betterment of Society or an Individual as a whole (Love)❓
-last time you walked, in deed and thought for one day, without knowing your thinking and doing is wrong whether it be coveting or jealous of something of another’s, addicted to some habit or ritual (idolatry) etc…One is not without Sin, therefore, never Holy.
-leaving a regenerated, justified, sanctified, unto glorified Behavior, In and Through Christ Jesus would definitely make impression and the world a better place.

I think the Stoics and Buddhists understood it best. That's a comprehensive subject but I especially recommend Stoicism to people who want to live a meaningful life.

Epictetus is an interesting example. He spent the bulk of his life as a slave. Yet he found a way to find inner peace and joy and meaning in spite of it, and he ended up winning his freedom in the end.

Marcus Aurelius is another. He is considered one of the few great and benevolent emperors of Rome, and also a strong adherent and advocate of Stoicism.

Mine gets me in trouble a bit here and there. I seem to be losing a good part of the practical filter as I grow older, and what I find hilarious when drunk sometimes embarrasses me the next day when sober. :-D That's one of the struggles I find with aging. If we started out quite decent in life, it can become harder to stay so with age. But studying such philosophies is one of the things that has helped prevent me from completely riding off the rails. They were much needed in my case.

... but I think -- on our death beds -- if we can reflect back and say we were overall quite decent, if not great, that might be the greatest type of "wealth" a person can ever possess.
