Do you believe our former pets come back as ghosts?

Someone was trying to break into our house recently while my parents and I were gone on a family trip. This is going to sound crazy but this is what happened:

He got arrested shortly and claimed to have been growled and chased by a grey pitbull with white spots. He got super scared, got out of there fast but then the dog disappeared. The only problem is no one in my neighborhood knows nor owns any pitbull at all. Secondly, his description of what he saw fit my former friend. She (Cindy was her name) was a female grey pitbull whom died in my arms when I was 4. She had terminal cancer and was very close to me.

All I know is if this happened, well then he deserved it. Do you believe our beloved pets can come back as ghosts?

I'm not a believer but i used to have an old dog that liked to sleep half way up the stairs. At night he'd prowl about then slowly make his way up. You could here a slow thud, thud, thud.. then a sigh as he bedded down on his favourite step.

After he died the noises continued for weeks.

Interesting. I guess he must've wanted you to feel safe. Even though I've never heard nor seen her ghosts, once in a while I do dream about her. It's always the same, exact dream. She's at the park being walked by someone else. Upon seeing me, she frees herself from the leash, runs up to me, wagging her tail and we embrace for the longest, walking together until my alarm sound. It was just a dream, ugh but my room feels warm afterwards.

It feels as if she would've been there giving me comfort. It's a warm feeling after that dream.

I guess. I never saw her ghost but once in a while, she appears in my dreams. It's always the same dream of someone else walking her on a leash, then as soon as she sees me, she frees herself from the leash and runs up to me, wagging her tail as if saying running up to a friend you missed. Then we're embracing each other, then my alarm sounds and the dream is over.

I think that often ghosts remain in the background until totally needed, like in the case of your family and the break in.

yeah. I was thinking of this. In regards to me dreaming of her. Could this be the reason:
When she died in my arms (I was 4 at the time and the last one to see her alive), I wouldn't stop crying and screaming. My parents said I was super sad that day that for years I had really forgotten her. I didn't remember her at all until last year. Then parts of my memory about her started coming back.
So I'm thinking it must be her way of saying ''I'm here for you, I'll always wait for you'' to comfort me, make me feel safe. If there is an afterlife and my time comes at old age, I guess I'll reunite with her.

I think this could absolutely be a reason. I am totally a zero expert on ghosts. In fact, I have zero knowledge, just good guesses and I liked your question. :) But you have reasonable answers for all this.

Nope I haven't seen her. I have only dreamt about her once in a while.
