Not polar opposite as book romans pointed out, god chose jacob over ismael and esau, with GRACE, not earned same as later in n. t.

O. t. had a purpose to "quit smoking" the phase of less sacrifices: stop human sacrifices and other animals just cow or sheep. Once they "cut down" they quit with jesus sacrifice once for all. no more sacrifices so same god same plan.

G0d always had a plan of salvation. But in the Old Testament, that involved a form of blood sacrifice. The New Testament reflects a new dispensation. The path of salvation was revised to a system of Confession, repentance, and a request and granting of forgiveness. It was always the same G0d, but he gave himself better tools with the passage of Jesus Christ.
