I am completely burned out.

Ever since I was a kid, I was passionate about careers. For a long time, my career was a huge part of my identity, but having worked 25+ jobs and not being able to hold a job down for at least a year, it really just unmotivated me.

It isn't just going to work and working hard anymore. You always have those co-workers or middle management that throw you under the bus. You have to navigate through all the workplace politics and drama with colleagues. You have to appease your co-workers and deal with micromanagement and co-workers that want to boss you around so they get promoted. There is also this emphasis on being the right "personality fit".

I have already changed careers once. My industry has been decimated and is now oversaturated. I am just tired at this point, and I have been happier lately collecting NEETbux (social security disability). I get $1,800 a month after deductions!

In my family it’s very much like the men sit with the men and we discuss man things, money/investing/career/politics etc… whereas the women sit on other tables with the kids and discuss their things.

I think men and women shouldn’t sit next to each other because men like to have conversations that women don’t like, women also like to interject often about nonsense sometimes interrupting what we think is important. It’s a mess.

Obviously at home with only your wife it’s different, I get that.

But what are you supposed to do? You’re up by one, a minute left, you’ve got to put it in the net. It comes with being on a good team. You get leads, and then you get those. I get it, though. People don’t love it, I’m sure. But the whole point is just to end the game.”

End the game. Wait. Hang on a second. Think about that for a moment. Empty-netters end the game. They’re the true game-winning goals. Score one and you’ve assured victory. They end the tension, they deflate the opponent, they send the fans home. They’re huge. So what if Ovechkin is the NHL’s all-time leader in empty-net goals? So what if more than 7 percent of his career goal totals came without an opposing goaltender on the ice?

That means more than 7 percent of his goals guaranteed a Washington Capitals win. That’s not nothing. And look who’s next on the list — Wayne Gretzky, the man Ovechkin is chasing for the all-time goals record. Gretzky scored 56 empty-netters in his career. After that, it’s Marián Hossa (40), Brad Marchand (38), Sidney Crosby (36) and Mario Lemieux (33). Pretty good company.

In my career as a teacher I started out being what I now consider to be a complete unreasonable prick. I would assign work over the vacation as well as frown upon parent/student chosen off days. I wouldn't even give any consideration to cuts of class when the student was having personal problems (think like crying in the bathroom, family crisis, had to work, didn't have child care - yes, I've had teen parents as students, etc). I still shudder when I think that I was that awful person.

Like everything else in life I lived and I learned. I now ENCOURAGE IF NOT DEMAND students to take a day off and I tell their parents explicitly "If adults can give themselves a day off why can't kids if they're not up to it?". I realized that there is nothing going on in my classroom that is more important than the lives that they live. The entire concept of giving school work over a break is so ludicrous to me now! It's called a "break" for a fucking reason (plus HW of ANY kind has ZERO discernable statistical difference in grades, retention, class satisfaction, etc).
