i am an African lady, born and raised in nigeria, i am currently living in Canada though.
as an African lady, i am expected to respect men without gaining respect in return. i want a guy who believes in equality between a man and a woman, a man who would respect me the way i respect him. i told my family about how i want to be a lawyer, but their answers was like that is really good but dont try to gain a lot of money than your husband, let your future husband be the leader, i replied back to them saying "what if i gain a lot than my husband, is that a bad thing" and they all replied yes that no man likes a woman who earned more than him. i was talking to two of my friends, one was a guy who just came from nigeria and the other one was a girl that was born in Canada, we were talking about relationship, i told them about how i paid during a first date and the guy ( a nigerian) never called back, m y guy friend told me not to ever pay for food on a date that it is a turn off for a guy, and my girlfriend said i did the right thing. another situation occured when i told my cousin that i want a guy who believed in sharing house work and he won't expect me to cook and go to work altogether and his reply was that i would die single and old. a guy asked me out on a date, and when i told him that i was virgin and i wasn't going to have sex with him, he said why and i replied that i dont believe in sex before marriage, and wasn't because of a religion, it is because of a personal experience. i am really too much? do i have high standard, if yes how do i bring it down?

Okay, first, she's not officially engaged yet, but she and the guy she is dating have been together for 7 years and plan to get married in the next couple years. And she's a bit of a ditz.

She was like my best friend when we were waitresses together, but when I started my career and moved 45 minutes away, it was hard to get in touch with her. She came to see me once and she never returns phone calls or texts, even now that I've moved back. And whenever she does call back, it's usually after at least a week and she only talks about herself. I came to see her when I first moved back a couple months ago and her 18 year old neighbor was there and referred to her fiance as 'boyfriend person or whatever'. I look at confused and said, 'Um, you have a ring on your finger, so wouldn't he be your fiance?' and she said yes.

My friend then looked at me and said, 'I know what you're thinking. How can she find a husband at 18 and I'm 26 but can't even get a guy to commit to me?' and then laughed, which isn't what I wasn't thinking at all. When I confronted her about it, she told it was a joke and moved on to the next topic.

Then she told me she wants me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding, but since I'll be the only black one, she wants me in the middle so we look like an inside out Oreo. She also told me her dog is racist and I'm the only black person she's ever responded well to. Yes, my friend is white.

Honestly, I really don't want to be in her wedding. I think we've grown way too far apart and, frankly, she is REALLY getting on my nerves. She first asked like 3 years ago which is when I promised to do it, but now that we've gotten together a few times, I don't even want to go to it.

Should I go because of a promise a made years ago or should I just tell her no? I don't dislike her, but I'm not really feeling being in her wedding.
