CPAC 2023: Kari Lake leans into Trump and stolen election claims during gala

Former Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake heaped praise on former President Donald Trump as a "bull in a China shop" during a gala speech in which she repeatedly rejected the legitimacy of her electoral defeat last year.

Lake contended that there is a battle between the "globalists vs. we the people" and characterized Trump as the great champion on behalf of the people during a keynote address to hundreds of VIP guests at the Ronald Reagan dinner for the Conservative Political Action Conference. Her speech illustrated Trump's dominance at CPAC.

"Donald Trump not only warned us about it — he started to dismantle that entrenched globalist machine," she said. "That man was a bull in a China shop. And I missed that man so much. That's exactly what we need right now."

Harkening back to the American Revolution, she suggested that the country was founded through a fight between "globalists vs. the colonists" and that "we still have that DNA from our founding fathers."

She juxtaposed Trump with President Joe Biden, decrying the latter as weak. At one point, she suggested Biden had "blood on his hands for this young generation" due to the border crisis. She later postulated that Trump could've brokered a peace deal in Ukraine in "24 hours."

Hundreds of people attended the gala at the Potomac Ballroom located in the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. Attendees were served steak and salmon.
Tickets sold for about $375 apiece but did not appear to fly off the shelf, with some remaining available a few days before the dinner took place. Guests largely dressed more formally than at the run-of-the-mill CPAC events, which were laxer in attire.

'A vital role:' Donald Trump endorses the idea of national abortion restrictions

Before an adoring crowd of religious conservatives, Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of the end of Roe v. Wade by adopting new language and endorsing the idea of national abortion restrictions.

Trump, who has previously discussed abortion as more of a state issue, told the cheering members of the Faith and Freedom Coalition "I will fight for you like no president ever" on the abortion issue.

'I'm being indicted for you'
Beyond faith issues, Trump again spent much of his speech asking supporters to stick with him in the face of criminal indictments and investigations.

Telling the pro-Trump crowd that the indictments are aimed at his campaign and its voters. Trump said "I consider it a great badge of courage... I'm being indicted for you."

A federal grand jury in Miami indicted the ex-president on obstruction of justice charges stemming from his removal of classified documents from the White House.

In late March, a state grand jury in New York indicted Trump on charges of falsifying business records to shield hush-money payments.

Trump could face two other trials. He is the subject of investigations in Atlanta and Washington, D. C., concerning efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.

Trump also protested the plea bargain of presidential son Hunter Biden, and accused Biden himself of corruption.

Jan. 6 rioter who electroshocked Michael Fanone shouts 'Trump won' after he's sentenced to 12½ years

A Donald Trump supporter who drove a stun gun into the neck of a Washington police officer who was abducted by the mob during the Jan. 6 attack on the U. S. Capitol shouted "Trump won" after he was sentenced to 12½ years in prison Wednesday, multiple people present in the courtroom said.

Daniel "D. J." Rodriguez, a California man who traveled to Washington with fellow Trump supporters who belonged to a Telegram group called the "PATRIOTS 45 MAGA Gang," pleaded guilty in February to felony conspiracy, obstruction of an official proceeding, tampering with documents or proceedings and inflicting bodily injury on officers using a deadly or dangerous weapon.

"There will be blood," Rodriguez wrote in a "MAGA Gang" Telegram chat on the night of Jan. 5, 2021, just hours before he attended Trump's rally at the Ellipse near the White House. "Welcome to the revolution.”

On Jan. 6, after having joined the fight in the Capitol's lower west tunnel — where some of the most violent scenes of the day played out — Rodriguez attacked Officer Michael Fanone, later bragging about his actions in the Telegram chat.

“Omg I did so much f---ing s--- [right now] and got away,” he wrote to fellow members of the Patriots 45 MAGA Gang. “Tazzed the f--- out of the blue.”
