Critical thinking is generally defined as the application of evidence or logic/reason to one's personal thoughts, in order to more fully understand either oneself or someone else's argument or viewpoint. It is the basis of getting into the *why* of what someone, including you, are saying (or thinking, in the case of oneself). And if the evidence or logic that someone claims supports their cause is faulty, or nonexistent, thinking critically is the decision made on your part to discern general truth from general fiction. It is the ability to look past labels or titles to get to foundations of pathologies or perspectives.
For example, someone thinking critically about various religious miracle stories in the Bible performed by Christ would be unsure of whether they can be taken as absolute, since no ordinary person can walk on water or transform water to wine, therefore it is unlikely (but not impossible, because hey, we weren't there) that it happened at all. Someone thinking critically about erroneous reports made by 45 about Muslims cheering on 9/11 about the Towers falling would ask for video footage dated from that day or reports from substantive journalists from respected sources, dated from that day. Someone critical about reports that phytoestrogens cause males to lose testosterone levels would ask for peer-reviewed scientific studies confirming that to be true, or at least possible.
