Yep, dancer for life got it below. Was a little late on this one. For a different way of possibly understanding it, remember that the alphabet is simply a sequence, and can be translated to numerical terms. It's usually easier to understand that way because you understand the relationship between 6 and 1 a lot easier than you understand the relationship between F and A.

So it becomes: 12452356

Breaking it into segments where it has "reset" (by reverting back to a lower number), you find that it is running in a pattern of four digits at a time: 1245 then 2356.

You can then discern that the four digit pattern is dictated by a starting number, followed by +1, +3 and +4. Since you know the second segment (2356) you can conclude that the starting digit of each successive segment starts with +1 the prior start digit.

So you know the next segment starts with a 3. And applying the formula of +1, +3 and +4, you get: 3, 4, 6, 7.

Translate that back to the alphabet and you see that it's: C, D, F, G.

Kudos to dancer4life for nailing it. Out of curiosity, which psychological principle was your teacher trying to prove with this riddle?

Most likely chunking. Breaking downing certain order of words or numbers into sometihng meaningful. mostly used as a nmemonic device but I can see it happening here.

CDF... that was rather easy...

first 4 characters are ABDE... notice how it skips C?

next 4 are BCEF... notice how it moves up 1 letter in the alphabet and skips what would be the 3rd letter in the sequence...

the next 4 would be CDFG,

then DEGH etc

CDF because if you look at them in pairs of twos they go

AB

DE

BC

EF

and when alternating pairs are put next to each other they are AB then BC and DE then EF so the next two pairs would be CD and then FG but since you only need the next three letters they are CDF :) what's the riddle for?

My professor gave us two problems...I was able to answer the second question, with ease, while more than half of the class had a hard time trying to figure that one out. Apparently, the one I asked was an easy one. And even you, my good sir, got it wrong.

I thought it was just an easy subject that women studied to pass the time until they can find a husband, like family economics and childhood education. In case you didn't notice, which I'm not surprised, I was just playing a little mind game on you, you think I don't know DEF is wrong when the right answer has been given twice already?
