Why are some Mexicans offended by gringos wearing sombreros?

I saw a sign at my school that said, "My culture is not a costume. This is not okay."
If it's offensive why do they sell them at every souvenir shop in Mexico, and why do they have those cutouts with sombreros where you can stick your face in? And why do Mexicans themselves wear them for festivities?

Because you can buy something in a shop just proves that someone wants your money. You can also buy slaves in some places. Does not mean everyone thinks it’s good.

Presumably a Mexican at a cultural festival has a different purpose in mind than you do when you were the hat. Just a wild guess.

You know you are free to ask the people who put up the sign at your school too

I know it's cultural appropriation, I'm trying to see what's so bad about it. As long as their not using it for mockery, I see it as a compliment. Mexican food is also cultural appropriation.

Well, I agree with you there, but they think you are mocking them just for wearing it. They said it's because we have the idea that Mexicans down there all wear sombreros. They think we are stupid.
