Anonymous(36-45)+1 yIt also has a lot to do with who's speaking. Like for example my girlfriend comes from Finland and when she starts speaking Finnish with her soft beautiful voice it sounds like music with all the vowels and words rolling into each other. It has a lot to do with her articulation and the fact that her consonants don't come off as hard. Kinda like elvish from Lord of the Rings. But when her father speaks the same exact language it sounds a lot like cursing. A lot of pauses, hard consonant, kinda like someone's choking and trying to speak at the same time. He also has a very loud, sharp voice when my gf's is pretty quiet and soft. I could listen to my girlfriend sweet talking me in Finnish all day and adore her language and the musicality of it but her father speaking it, no thanks, please change to English.
Oh and Spanish is awesome! It also has this kinda musicality to it. Flowing very easily, words becoming one, everything sound pretty and consonants aren't too harsh.10 Reply

It just depends on a language's linguistic construct.. Some use a lot vowels (a, e, i, o, u) which simply have a nice, soft and rounded sound to the human ear.
Others use less of these, making some words sound harsh or incomplete.
Some base their language on syllables, making it sound well structured and ordered, while others are based on single letters.. These languages may have syllables in their own way but not always the same, making the language sound arbitrary and unstructured.
There more reasons I could name (some also are connected to biology and how our brain works) but I suppose that you understand the concept from just that.10 Reply
+1 yA lot of it may have to do with how vowels and/or consonances are accented in different languages. I think German can be beautiful, but I’ll admit it’s unpleasant and scary to me when my little cousin yells in German. Maybe it’s the hard consonances? I find that French sounds amazing and I think most people agree, and it could be all the vowels and how it just seems to flow. German and French are on two very opposite ends of the language spectrum. Then there’s Chinese compared to Vietnamese. I think Vietnamese is a lot more unpleasant because, to me, it sounds a lot choppier. Chinese on the other hand is the most-used language on the planet and honestly sounds as normal to me as English (my first language). Not pleasant or unpleasant necessarily to the ears.

+1 yBecause of the stereotypes we associate with the sounds. Some sounds are more practical, others more sensual, some more classy and some more guttural. To me, a language is about practicality, getting from A to B. If you start talking about beauty, then we get into fetishizing.

+1 yI'd say there is a degree of subjectivity, a degree of the harshness of the language and accent as well as the shapes made by the mouth. Rolling tongues and pouting lips are more attractive than bared teeth and pursed mouths for example.
For me there is also the familiarity. People think my country's native language is ugly (and some of it is!) but the older words I find beautiful. They often aren't direct translations but more poetic descriptions so for me I enjoy that aspect. The same can be seen in other languages too.10 Reply
+1 yThats a pretty simple question actually. Its all down to math. If a language has a more "balanced" tone, or if it has a specific resonance, our brains will perceive it as more beautiful. For instance, I love to hear people talk in farsi (altough I can't understand squat) and I can't stand to be near people speaking romanian. Romanian is a particular language with latin origins, not cyrillic. Altough cyrillic sounds "harsh" i find most of those languages pleasant. Nordic languages are simply boring for me. A curious case is the japanese, I feel completely attracted to the sound of low key japanese, but if its the high pitched, usually female, japanese, it gives me murderous feelings.
10 ReplyYou can answer that question by yourself. It's just because of the words. Some letter combinations just sound better then others. Maybe softer, more logical or easier. For example the german word for speed limit is "Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung". That word is way to long for the normal, lazy human to enjoy it. Its also important how you speel the words. Is it slow or quick, soft pr hard, complicated or easy...

+1 yIt has to do with sounds. The tone, the speed, how much 'soft' or 'harsh' sound is there and all. When speaking with putting more stress on consonants than vowels, it sounds sexy. That's most probably why British accent sounds so pleasant to us.
10 Reply 8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I could probably devolve into a knife fight with most people in Europe about how ugly I find French so I would not say there are objectively beautiful languages or ugly languages. That said some do really sound "softer" than others.

@Pikachula I think it sounds like they just came from the dentist and have no feeling in their tongue from the anesthetic.
Different combination of vowels and consonants I guess. Some just sound softer, and usually languages with more vowels sound more musical and have more flow to it.
40 ReplyI think it has a lot to do with the flow of the language. Some languages have a certain tone and pattern to them that is more or less appealing to certain people.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI think It has to do with the sound and what you associate to those speaking. For me the Spanish language It's my favourite, It sounds so sensual... but that's also what I think about Latins. And English doesn't sound so good to me, maybe because I don't find them attractive
10 ReplyI believe if the said language sounds similar to your mother tongue then it should be more comfortable for you to hear.

Swedish, Danish and German shares many similarities with my language Norwegian. No, I don't find them pleasant sounding. I find French, Spanish, Italian and British English nice sounding.
People are saying Spanish sounds sexy or nice? In my opinion it sounds awful, especially with that sssslss. What are they snakes? 😂😭
Italian sounds cool though or greek.
I think it's the tone that makes it nicer or the way they talk.
Scandinavian languages often sound like they are from outerspace to me, coming to visit our earth. Not that it's ugly or bad but it literally sounds like nothing else, can't compare it to anything.00 ReplyCause it sounds better. It's like a song without music. Some words are soft and it's pleasure to listen them, but some words are painfull and sounds bad. And some languages have more type 1 words and some have more type 2 words. (Hope you understand...)

+1 ySoft letters are less harsh on the ear and those languages are more attractive. Heavy use of vowels/soft consonants.

+1 yI'm born in Canada, English speaking. I find some Spanish accents, depending where from are awesome. German is very rough. Dutch is even worse. Russian is very clear but not "nice" sounding although not butchered like German and Dutch. French is very nasal.

No offense but I thought Dutch sounded like German with marbles in their mouth.

+1 yThat is an interesting question.
I think it comes down to basic human condition, a familiar language sounds pleasant while a strange one sounds uneasy.
Also, English is relatable from the media, which makes it sound good.10 Reply Deep accents usually sound "cheaper" as opposed to the lighter accents. But that's only because English is the national language. Therefore, light languages spoken in deep accents, and vice versa, wouldn't sound accurate.
10 Replypersonally, I think that all roman languages sound cool - french, italian, Spanish, and find french girls adorable when they speak. I tried to learn french but didn't move much but got good in italian because i had a friend who spoke it and i practiced with him. Still on my to do list, to learn all 3 of them

and I wouldn't have a slightest clue why they sound the way they do, but on point of baltic languages, I don't know, they sound really rough to me. Slavic languages are sort of ok, Arabic and middle east just crazy bad, can never pick up where a word starts or finishes, lots of throat sounds. Chinese very hard to make out and to follow if you try to learn. Thai very strange, one of the most intriguing languages , Japanese and Korean easy to pick up.
