Is anyone here a sadomasochist?

I'm not really sure if this is the right place for this question, but I think it can apply to an individual and society, which is why I post it here.

Plenty of cultures embrace what is usually described in the western & Christian worlds as "the golden rule:" do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

On the surface, this seems like a fair standard for conducting oneself. But what if you're a sadomasochist? You might like things one way, but the world around you is totally different in their views. Does a guideline like this go out the window, so to speak?

Can anyone relate, preferably a sadomasochist, or maybe someone close to a sadomasochist? Also: this question is *not* meant in a strictly sexual context.

Not really a sadist (certainly not a masochist). I think that in that case it becomes more about intent. In a typical sm (sadomasochistic in this case, not slave/submissive master) the intent is that both partners receive and give pleasure to the other, it may be via different means but there is reciprocation. Also, from what I understand roles switches can be rather instructive, and many sadists (or at least dominants) test their equipment before usage (sometimes on themselves).

I'm not a sadomasochist, or even religious.

But I won't lie that, as a sentient person and who recognizes sentience in other people, that the "golden rule" is a decent summarization of what most people believe.

But I can see why a sadomasochist might create controversy under such a guideline.

Masochist usually engages in a lot of sexual activities. A sadist too but it's more violent sexual activities. It's a personality disorder from childhood and the sadomasochist combo is extremely rare. I think I've only ever seen one on here. It was a guy who said he enjoyed boxing. He said he loves hitting people and getting hit back...
