I don’t agree... at least not 100%. It is not Shakira’s or that other lady’s duty to keep it wholesome. It’s not. They were hired to do what they do. So if people have a problem with the image or the messaging, they should be directing it to the producers of the show who gave the performers a green light to do all that. It ain’t about feminism or whatever the hell. It’s just entertainment. And I don’t recall the time where we all came to the conclusion that halftime shows were supposed to be “family friendly”. Did I miss something? 😂 Sure I guess the game itself is for everyone but let’s not act like we collectively and actively placed certain “guidelines” for halftime promotion. That’s all that it is. It is just promotion. The producers put whatever they want out there into the world for the sake of money and reputation. Ethics aren’t exactly at the forefront of these decisions, nor do I think they should (in most cases) because at the end of the day, if the parents or whoever doesn’t want their kids watching it, they have the full power to turn the tv off.

I believe what Tim is saying is that this type of entertainment and depiction of women is rampant in the media and other circles and the effects of this depiction might be causing negative effects for both men and women of all ages, most likely those who are younger. The specification of “negative effects” can be anything from deceased self-esteem, self objectification, tension between the sexes, etc. The reason why we even consider this to be entertainment and to be worthy of the big stage is probably because of a very long historical answer of categorizing and objectifying women a certain way, which might be why depression, attempts on suicide, etc. have been a problem in women and continue to be without decrease to my knowledge. Also, why things like the makeup industry is so wealthy... The market for objectification, sexualization, and commodification of women is rampant in society and it’s so normalized that everyone just sees it as part of normal society
I agree with it, people lead by setting an example. Kids copy everything they see. I don' think it's a coincidence that women are dressing slutier as women in the media dress sluttier. It's not like Beyonce has a choice though. These women sold their souls to the people with the bigger picture who are trying to ruin us. They own all of the media and will put out whatever they want because they know it affects the people. You don't lead a country by being a president, you do it by controlling the media.
Of course I agree, its a perfectly reasonable statement. You do not deserve respect simply by existing, you do not deserve respect when you act in a way that is disrespectful either to yourself or others. At one point in time that was just common sense. you should always have the right to live your life as you see fit but their is an element of hypocrisy from women who dress in revealing clothing and who actively sell themselves through self sexualization complaining about objectification. They did it to themselves so why do they think that others will not do so? That's just irrational, hypocritical and quite frankly is a behavior I don't think is deserving of respect.
So his military position has zero play ono what his opinion is on the half time show. That’s great he served his country. But is he also fine with men not wearing shirts on stage? I feel if it was a guy half naked no one would bat an eye. A 50 beautiful women rides down a pole and everyone is shocked 😳. Why can’t we let our children see what appropriate entertainment is. I’ve seen a lot more revealing clothing at basketball/football games no one says a damn thing then. Also, if your kids have iPhones just imagine what they have access to already.
I just think it is odd that free-speech folks aren't really for free-speech. They just believe in the freedom to voice ideals or do things that they are comfortable with. As long as the speech does not threaten violence, incites breaking the law, child sex abuse/pornography, etc. it is supposed to be protected.
But at GaG, the only time most folks get mad is if they think there are legal repercussions for hate speech. Which there are not. A company firing you for being sexist is not a legal repercussion.

Tim did not say he was against free-speech, rather, disagreeing with the overall message this entertainment sends out to the broader society. While Tim might not agree with it, he even said he’d fight for the right for these women to do these very things he disagrees with.
I am not taking issue with Tim Kennedy. I thought you were trying to make a point. Because we have talked about free speech at GaG too many times. And every single time hate speech trolls claim their freedom of speech is being infringed upon. What they mean is, they do not want to face the consequences of making hateful statements. All of us have free speech. Including the right to voice our opinion whether it be where we buy good and services, who we hire, or where we protest.
Well, I believe you implied that Tim and I weren’t for free speech just because we were against what was being demonstrated at the Super Bowl Half-Time show. I believe that this message is concerning to the general public, especially to young girls. We both believe that this type of entertainment further continues to commodify the objectification of women in the media and illustrate a negative/object portrayal of women. So, if you want to empower women then this is not the way to go. If you want to boost the self-esteem and decrease the depression rates of women, this is not the way to go.

As for empowering women, I am a man. I have no idea what women think about their own empowerment. As an outsider to the experience, I care little about classifying or grouping women as a whole. Different women have different beliefs. Some women wear a sign on their crotch claiming trump can grab their stuff. Others dance nearly naked on a stripper pole. And still others wear pantsuits every single day.'
I ain't a woman. I will never had to attract a man. I will never have to take birth control to control a period.
I don't know much about their struggles. But on occasion I do listen.
I can see where his comment came from. I understand that super bowl and football in general is a topic mostly addressed to men, and thus I could justify the choice of "show" they wanted to include. On the other hand though there's a fine line between sexy and provocative. The poses he posted certainly would seem more appropriate in a strip club than on TV. Especially women like Shakira or J. Lo. They can practically wear anything and still be sexy, so maybe the whole thing was a bit exaggerated... And yes, as a woman I would feel uncomfortable watching this. Especially in a room packed with guys.

It's true that stereotypes are ruling in the industry of fashion and make up. For young kids it is important for me to show them the truth, which is so much easier nowadays.
Taking the example of the topic you chose - pick up your phone or go to the computer and show your kid pictures of Shakira when she doesn't wear make up and is not dressed for show. Like this one Explain to kids that they are seeing a show, not the actual person. Many models have end up sharing their real pictures for that reason. To stop objectification. Show who they really are, without Photoshop and make up. There used to be a show on TV many years ago doing exactly that. I remember an episode of a girl who was anorexic because she wanted to be like her favourite model. The host of the show invited the model to the show and had her strip down to her underwear to show her real body. The girl was shocked by the amount of Photoshop that had been used in her favourite poster. They also showed her other before and after Photoshop pictures to show her that deep down this "model" is just a human...
So why not do the same with your kids? Explain to them that this is not the truth, and that this is also not necessarily healthy. Well, ok some people have a high metabolism and can be slim without trying... but it's not the norm.
And in the end I would make sure to explain to my kids that the most important thing is for them to feel good with themselves. It doesn't matter if you are 100 pounds or 110 pounds as long as you're within a healthy weight, it doesn't matter if your 2meters tall or 1,60m as long as you can accept yourself for who you are. It doesn't make you less beautiful to have small breasts and not be a DD 🤷♀️
And I'd say the same to a boy... Not everyone needs to have well trained protruding abs and biceps in size of a (insert what you want here... Can't find a word right now) If he likes to work out for fun or to stay healthy he is free to do so, but he shouldn't obsess with it...

Agree. They whore themselves and them claim it's a message against sex trafficking and they do the same thing messing around with different people. They are right. I used to listen to their music and such. I thank God I stopped. It has a lot of impact because girls think that's sexy and that it will get them guys. And guys have a hard time respecting women or themselves sexually. I used to think it was okay to do. And I'M a Christian. Look at the movie Labyrinth with Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. Both great actors, a great movie and what happened after they did a study? Theu found that 100,000s of teenage girls started losing their virginity left and right by 13+. Men are complaining about women being sluts and such, how do they think? They know this is a market for men. Not women. Woman never had confidence issues until we started showing all our bodies to everybody. It's sad. Now practically every guy thinks that's how a woman should be. And it's not.
I get the point. Kids well witness different kind of people while growing up to identify too. Those are people in the entertainment business. It's like when you go to a circus or so. But kids will also be aware on how their parents dress and act first, then people in school to finally people at work. It's the job of the parents to actually lead the way on what is proper and what is not while giving you the confidence needed to find your way. I think it is important that kids be exposed later on to different people, and with a solid education they can tell that wearing a bikini in public at the street isn't right. The clothes shakira and jlo are wearing are purely used for a show. Now about girls being objectified, that's an issue that isn't going away anytime soon.
I think a 3 year old watching football is with unaware or doesn't give a fuck. Or you could argue the kid should not be watching football with that dad, who likely yells when the team doesn't do good.
Also, this man poses with knives, guns and with his shirt off. I think that makes him a bit of a hypocrite. I didn't like the Superbowl. If anything, you could argue it is sexist for a male dominated viewership to be graced by attractive women flaunting themselves on TV in order to make money.
I do agree with his (the late parts) statement simply because that's how it works.

I thought the halftime performance was very entertaining and the two women put on a great show.
Obviously that stuff is over-sexualized and not appropriate for children to watch (male or female.). But that's American pop culture these days (and for the past 20 years, at least.). That's just how it is. We don't live in a Christian society.
Now, whether or not they should have been that provocative in the Super Bowl is another question. Sometimes it is good to be tactful and exercise restraint when performing at a family event.
The point is, it's a SHOW! it's not ordinary life. It features afro centric dancing that is hip centered and suggestive. If someone's daughters are professional dancers, then they should be gyrating in that manner. If it's not the superbowl, they should tame it down a bit. It's the same as in music vids. It's over the top... Not ordinary life.

I am saying the exact opposite. it is NOT normal. It is an event that pulls out all stops. The belly dancing, hip centric moves both dancers and their teams display have been used in African, Middle Eastern and Spanish dancing for millennia. They're wearing fewer clothes. These dances originated among warriors and young maidens to advertize their mating/warrior readiness. (Also true among pacific islanders) It IS about sex. But it is a metaphorical display. (both men and women are dancing, but not dancing to mimic sexual acts) These women, and men, are showing their dancing prowess. As in tribal and regional dances, their fitness for being mates. These are modernized versions of ancient displays. If you recognize their histories, you won't overlay modern objectification issues onto these displays. Women singers like Beyonce, Shakira and J Lo show their power in these presentations, as Zulu warriors have done in their dances, as Flamenco does. It's about their skill at what they do. Their display is life affirming, not denigrating. It's there to see and enjoy, not to feel slighted that we can't do the same. It's a celebration of being alive.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with Jennifer Lopez flaunting a new style of dance that she put a lot of hard work into learning. She looked amazing up there and was graceful and powerful. There's nothing wrong with that.

The real message is that it's ok for a woman to present herself as a sex object and to exploit themselves, and men's sexual nature, for profit. But to see them as a sexual object and react as our sexual nature deems fit is inherently wrong. In other words, women are good and men are bad.
they were just having fun and made artistic choices that can be percieved as sexual but i dont think their intentions were to make a sexy show, i think they were trying to make an exciting show

I’m not talking about the game. The topic, in my opinion, is about the halftime show, depicting women in a sexually objectified position. Tim is saying how this can have negative effects on the broader society, especially towards women, younger women, and girls.
When you start doing things like this, you are going to upset people. Listening to the response of this show it has upset s lot of people. Specially the TV coverage. You would think it would have been handled better. If I remember didn't a well known singer make a mess of it, not knowing the words or miming out of sync to music.
I'm not American, I did not watch it, I don't know anything about it, I don't care to know anything about it.
