Why do you think hate crimes are on the rise? How do you think we can overcome this?
Here's a connection that I can make that will send some people into a tizzy. Global warming. Human activity (such as a dependence on oil, and economies built on capitalism and consumerism living a throwaway culture and trying to bury all the damn garbage, and a stupid food supply chain that now uses plastics to contain just about everything) causes environmental instability. Both highs and lows in temperature and rainfall swings. Which causes ice caps melting which changes the salt proportion of the water to detrimental effects to sealife and food supply; and hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. Which destroys cities, homes, lives, and livelihood. Which sends those displaced people trying to escape to other parts of the globe. Which causes huge increases in mass immigration. Which is at a rate too fast to appropriately assimilate them into the society. (Remember all the immigrants that went on a raping spree in Germany, after Germany so kindly took thousands in?) So then the local citizens are furious, and rightly so. Often jobs are scarce enough to begin with. The cost of living in many countries is outrageous. The middle class has been squeezed almost out of existence. And governments say there isn't enough pension to support everyone. Many simply cannot retire.
Also, add covid. It came from China. But 99.9% of Chinese are not responsible, had nothing to do with it. Wtf is up with the gov't over there. Have they ever heard of the word transparency? Not when it comes to their activities. Yet they are tracking their citizens on payment cards so they know exactly how much they spend and where and when. They block any site they don't agree with - Facebook, gaming. Talk about a nanny state. Who the hell would trust them? Yet people should not be taking out their distrust on the individual citizens who live in other countries and are just living their lives, trying to make it, just like everyone else.
And big oil. If there wasn't still so much money to be made on oil (even with all the inherent risks to especially dredging it up out of the oceans, and then transporting it in pipelines through the beautiful land, our best natural resource), then there wouldn't be so much price-fixing and manipulation, and war in the territories which have it. Another reason people are displaced - war. No wonder these people want to gtfo and go somewhere nicer. It's not simply about having something nicer to look at outside the window. It's literally life or death for some people.
Add to this changing social values, such as the straight vs. non-straight sexualities. Presidents like Trump which used anger, not hope, to rally, which split the country in half and destroyed any sense of democracy. No country lives in a vacuum. And whether the rest of the world likes it or not, the U. S. is hugely influential, in both economic and social ways.
The rise in equality of all sorts of groups. The more the underdog and underrepresented gain, the more pushback (or down pressure) there is from 'the other side.' They're losing their stronghold and don't like it. Racial makeups (proportions of the population) are changing, sexuality is way more fluid now, females are in the workplace and universities now, marriage rates are down, church-attendance is down, everyone's heard the numbers about the rich getting richer and everyone else being squeezed.
I think it has to do with the pandemic. a lot of Americans are sitting at home having mental breakdowns. They watch their way of life changing. The news giving gloom and doom.
Fox painting this picture that black lives matter is trying to destroy America.
Making it seem like all Asians are the enemy because of the virus.
Other media sites pushing this picture of white people all being racist.
There is a lot of anger and frustration and hatred being built up. Then people get on social media to vent their frustrations.
Instead of speaking to eachother with respect everyone just yells and insults eachother's race religion and sexual orientation.
Nobody stops to think if their words are helping to breed and create more racists, just as long as they win their argument by any means necessary.
They are on the rise because it wasn't something anybody actually tracked until recently, and now it's politically convenient to label anything and everything a hate crime no matter how far you have to stretch it.
If for example someone of a different race than me broke into my house and I shot him solely because of the fact he broke into my house, it would almost certainly be treated as a "hate crime" or "racist profiling" even though none of that had anything to do with committing an act of self defense. Pretty much any altercation involving people of different races automatically becomes a racial issue by default.
It's also worth mentioning however that in many parts of the US (and likely other countries as well), even if say a Haitian and some hypothetical black guy who's family had lived in the US for 8 generations actually did commit a definitive hate crime against each other (in reality they largely do not get along and do not see themselves as the same people, and this is just one example; they exist in every color and creed), it won't be treated as such, but will instead be considered gang violence and more than likely totally unreported, or outright misrepresented.
If Kylie Jenner says something stupid in a magazine and a boy laughs, the bus goes into lockdown and police haul him off, then debate which category of "hate crime" he allegedly committed, so they can justify this gross overreach.
With the UK super-saturated with such nonsense, those numbers could mean anything. Regardless if plain reason does or doesn't verify that a crime happened at all, the outside the law arbitrations of agencies in the UK acting as a law unto themselves, seem to think they can supersede the actual law, to say nothing of the capacity to supersede plain reason! A maniac from Afghanistan could slaughter 50 children in cold blood, and be caught raping the corpses. But he's part of "a minority.". And now they somehow know better than the actual perp what he and you were thinking, and base a pre-deternined show trial on that assumption!

I think the social media has a lot to do with it, how it works. The youtube and such filter for the same crap you saw before. Doesn't take long to see patterns and spew bad emotions.
Increased inequality, perception of others doing well and they are not. I think that's true in USA. In general, people aren't being trained to be tolerant, trained in value systems... used to be religions. So we have hurt, poorly emotionally trained humans clashing. Probably gets worse from here...
I hear you. I do think rising poverty doesn't help. But if one racial group is on the down hill why does that cause them to dislike another race that's on the rise. And that is where we find the issue to resolve. Jealousy is a powerful emotion but to invoke such hate is scary.
I see that in NYC harlem. A lot of the crime seen against Asians and Jews is African American. Why would they pick on them? Asians/Jews are successful and displacing the AA's who aren't making it.. they are being gentrified (pushed out economically). Only thing that saves them is govt price fixing and social payments. wouldn't shock me if they are discriminated against, have harder time getting jobs.. how many chinese restaurants hire non chinese? Not many. It isn't just color but culture. People not feelings connected, seeing themselves as victims on TV... creates bad feelings and they go any direction. Anger... is directionless... get angry, it spreads to anyone.
Solution is to create success in those cultures, but that's tough. Oddly, these groups commit more minor actions... outbursts of anger, rage... people get hurt or killed or lose stuff. But other cultures, tend to do mass killings, war, when they go nuts.
yes, it's always been a mess though. Yes, money gains access and power. It was a mess as noted in the Bible when Cain killed Able, long ago, true or not. Wasn't much $ then... only rocks. The issue is the underlying "negative" ... human emotions. It's the sub conscious mind driving all this, rooted in shame, fear, greed, malice, etc.. I'm sure you see the difference between "good" behavior.. care consideration, love, patience... and the other not good behavior in society. What is promoted in media? There is definitely a bias to what is promoted, what sells, and what causes reaction.

You just need to look at the racism directed towards footballers etc, that enough is enough really. Yeah okay someone may be a shit play, however skin colour etc does not come in to it.
There is a lot of shit reporting done and capturing of real reasons needs to be sorted, it’s likely not on the rise, just reporting of this stuff is getting better.
The test for these things is - if your son, daughter, wife etc was subject to a hate crime would you be okay with it.
Contrary to what you been fed by school or media that "diversity is our strength" is bull.
Anytime you have a influx or a society with lots of people of a different ethnic, religious, political cultures, mannerism, languages and various backgrounds it creates tension, envy and suspicions within that society and people can mostly will act with violence and hate as they feel their territory is being overtaken by foreigners or that foreigners start to feel embolden and entitled in foreign land.
Diversity simply doesn't work. One culture or group of people totally different in ideals is a recipe for a ugly clash.

Things will only get worse. I know that most people like to cope by being optimistic, looking at the world through rose tinted glasses and assuming that “good” will win in the end, that everything will work out fine etc. And to claim that anybody who says otherwise is just fear-mongering, but what we’re experiencing now is a culture in decline.
We have been for a while I’d say, slowly ever since the 60s, but since then at an ever increasing pace.
We’re about to experience the fallout from the lockdowns, and most people’s wallets are going to be hit hard. Inflation will increase the prices of absolutely everything, in some places we’re already seeing it, but our wages will stay the same and we’ll have less purchasing power. There will also be food shortages. As more and more people struggle financially and they can barely afford to live, society will become more and more unstable and violent.
Hate crimes represent a small minority of violent crime and violent crime has fallen by 72% from 1995.
You could increase the level hate crimes by a factor of 30 and still not be at the overall level in 1995.
So it seems to me like you are making something out of nothing, you have already stated that the upwards trend on the chart you posted is the result of changes in crime reporting.

No it's not wrong... Its constantly being updated and if you read what was there its states that reporting has changed. So the report is a reflection of data collected. That makes it different not wrong.
The numbers may well be more accurate in absolute terms but changing the way the data is collected means that what you cannot now accurately use the data set for is indicating trend lines, which is exactly what you are trying to do with it.
Its not the data that I have a problem with, it is the manner in which you are choosing to interpret it, i. e. in a way which suits an agenda that you have.
No the data is collected the same the reporting has been altered there's a more detailed specification and yes the reports have increased. Im not sure what kind of agenda you think I'm pushing. The question clearly states this is about hate crime, and how can we overcome this? This is the only agenda... The data has been collected from the year shown to the year end. There was another article I looked at and they focused primarily on hate crimes against homophobia and transgender which was something along the lines of 210% and 300% rise, I don't work with those numbers and the bottomline is hate crime isn't specified to just the lgbt community, it affects many and the more of those groups you fit ie sexuality, gender, a religious belief and specified race your chance of facing a hate multiplies... So what then? I posted what I thought seemed the most realist from the various sources I found. I do urge you to read the site. And then you can decide whether hate crime has increased or not. I personally would love to know if you personally are within any of those affected groups and whether you yourself have ever had to report a hate crime... If there are any solutions you think you could offer to helping reduce these numbers please feel free to add your opinion.
I probably wouldn't have minded had you taken a different stance. But any one that deals with data knows different variables affect the way results are shown. So unless completed by the same person under the same conditions using the same sources the results will always vary.

I had to think about what you quoted to me in your last response and I still don't get what you're trying to say to me. The statistics aren't closely matched to what's actually going on. If anything the numbers now probably reflect what's more close to the reality. But that doesn't change the fact that these hate crimes have been going on even when they were being reported. That's like the old if a tree falls and there's noone there to hear it.

Pretty sure this is supposed to say 'werent being reported'. In any case we can only work off the numbers that we have, its no good to base things off what you think might be happening, because everyones personal perception is going to be different and has little to no connection to reality. Humans are extremely bad at knowing anything which is why we collect data like this in the first place.
I have no doubt there are incidents which have occured but which haven't been reported, but that is true for every crime and if you haven't reported it then arguably you dont get to expect anyone to be doing anything about it. I dont think that is unreasonable.

Because approximately 90% of violent crime is not 'hate crime' so you would only need to reduce that, by whatever, 12% ? Lets call it 15% to reduce overall violence by an amount equal to or greater than the entire problem you are focused on.

No, I dont, I belong to a group of people for whom being on the receiving end of violence is so common you just have to accept it as part of the job and also accept that reporting crimes to the police is a probably a waste of time because they won't even listen because of the group of people I am from.
So perhaps you will forgive me if i am not in a big rush to rally behind you and insist that scare public resources are devoted to your problem when there is already massively disproportionate amount of attention being paid to your particular plight.

I've lived in the uk for 30 years, I've been followed home and to work 3x, I've been groped 3x on public transport/nightsout, I've had men flash me 2x, I've been subjected to profound discriminatory speech at least 4x.
Of all of these I report just one because of where I worked is was a direct risk to me. This guy was actually stalking me. He followed me on to the train and into the same carriage whilst, hurling disgusting sexually motivated racist language, noone even said anything to him. I tried to lose him on the train by getting off a stop after mine and just before the doors closed but he jammed his arm to stop them closing. He followed me onto the other platform to go back to my stop. I had to call my mum to meet me halfway. We filed a report that day, I was escorted to and from work by the police the following day. I had never spoken to the man, but cctv showed he'd been following me at work. You're a white male, so unfortunately it's highly unlikely you'd be subjected to these types of crimes. It's also highly likely that men within your genetic makeup are the one's perpetrating these crimes. So I wouldn't expect you to understand. So it's not neoliberalism it's people fed up of being harassed!

I think the shift is changing because the police are allowing different racial groups into the force. That means they have to address the various issues that surround each racial group. Their knowledge based has increased and with a more rounded team they are more relatable and better able to deal with the situations. They're still not 100% but it's changing. I personally reported the crime because my team supported me. It was a high profile venue and I guess as well as my well being it wouldn't look good if something were to happen to me especially when they found this guy had actually been following me around. Some may say it's a came with an agenda but actually it was beneficial to me to report it. I hate when people talk about neoliberalism. Because as irritating as it may seem that they're ranting so much about 'issues' they're working to make positive changes. I for one can say I am grateful the police escorted me to and from work, with him being drunk who's knows his mental state and what he would have done to me. He was an idiot! I can also say there are many women white, black, Asian and Turkish in my friendship group that can say they have been subjected to sexual or racial motivated crime. It has to stop. Its not an irrational woman syndrome its blatent things like I mentioned in all honesty I'm not entirely sure crimes have decreased. We may not have the shop front smeared with racist language or people spitting at a person of colour passing by but it's certainly become more covert. Simply because people try not to get prosecuted. Look how long it took for them to make wolf whistling an offence.
yeah it needs to be a change not just in police but also in education and culture but yes i am hopeful that things are slowly getting better... a soon as the media stop perpetuating the right wing agenda of descrediting groups like #metoo and blm and indeed extinction rebellion too as just radicalism then im sure society can become more equal

I think hate crimes are on the rise cause of Politics, Covid, Vaccines, People hate to hear it but we are living in the last days and I feel that even if Covid disappears, It will be a seasonal Virus that will be treated with medication or seasonal Vaccines and the reason of hate is cause people don't want change and it's sad for sure
I think it's a combination of more people reporting these things than before (similar to metoo for example), and they've also criminalised things which frankly shouldn't have been criminalised which leads to an increase without any real crime behind the numbers.
Are there any crimes in particular that shouldn't have been criminalised? I always thought laws go through vigorous trails, at least against what constitutes as basic human rights and laws of the land.
I think it's statistically fudging the numbers. More things are now deemed to fall under the umbrella of hate crime, so if something happens, it's categorized as that and then then numbers show that there are more hate crimes.
In other words, the term has lost meaning, if it had any and has become very loose. Because of that, I'm inclined to ask what exactly happened in the commission of those crimes for them to be worthy of arrest and/or prosecution.

Stop making everything about race and instead have a colorblind society. The democrats push that white people are racist and we need to pay reparations, minorities get pushed to the front of the line for government jobs and our federal government is just one big affirmative action hire. How does that promote harmony?

@doopayo with an attitude like that , yes it will never happen. I teach at a local college. In the cafeteria the black kids sit on one side and the white kids sit on the other. Until that changes, nothing else will.
It’s not an attitude, it’s facing reality. Racism is much bigger than what happen on an individual level so until people can recognize that and the several other systems in place that work to uphold racism than change won’t happen.
@doopayo I believe that individual people can make a difference. Why should the color of somebody's skin make a difference in their character or competency? There are so many different criteria that we could classify people, Height, weight, hair color etc. If we could just make skin color as innocuous as a person's hair color instead of making it the defining characteristic of a person it would go a long way to create a colorblind society.
That’s your utopian hyper unrealistic way of thinking about it. Racism is not as simple as you believe, it is a systemic issue and the only way to dismantle it is to address it. Not ignoring it and hoping for the best, affirmative action doesn’t make a difference in competency.

I think of all crime as hate crime, most crimes against someone is cause they hate that person.
Even so, the best weapon is to stop having specific crimes be considered hate crimes and just increase penalties on all crimes to match what hate crimes would have.
I think it's because we make too much of a point to acknowledge racial differences and force it down everyone's throat. being told your naturally racist because your white and that you could or never feel oppressed can make anyone brew resentment. why can't we all just get along?

I don't think that's true actually. I'd be curious to know whether you're aware of the way things really are. I have been to many work spaces due to being a temp in my healthcare industry and its surprising how many of those environments are predominantly white. You can get the odd place that has an Asian but what's interesting is how I'm treated. You may be greeted by the hiring manager nicely but I've been in places where people will grab their belongings or keep running back to the staff room during lunch to ensure their stuff is protected. I have had people ask me how often do I wash my hair. I have had people tell me that I need to have a more refined sleeker appearance if I want to continue to return to their work place. I've had people shut me out of basic conversations, or if for example there's a group of non British whites together, speak collectively in their language. I even had a person talk predominantly about slavery in front of patient's as a "fascinating subject especially how they were able to mentally overpower so many black people" then man handle the black patients aggressively versus the Asian and white patients. I've had people tell me to not speak when I'm in the room with them under no circumstances, I've been told to bring things to the room then wait outside the door like a dog. I've been sent away when I arrived simply because they didn't like the look of me. Now what's that all about? I'm not trying to get any of you to pity me.
I'm just trying to get you to understand that this behaviour is unacceptable. You may say I'm relating it solely to my race. But the harsh reality is its hard to not think of it in any other way when I'm qualified to do the job I do. I have a degree, and diplomas. I have 8+ years of experience. I have also recommendations from consultant level professionals. I'm born and bred British yet I'm still subjected to this. Everyone is in a difficult situation in the uk, especially since the conservatives have come in to power, as they just keep squeezing us, financially and mentally with all the side stepping they keep doing to prevent us from making strides in our lives to keep our heads above the water whilst they live their pockets off our demise.
But the ones that are suffering the most are the people on the poverty line and the people the masses can't stand and that is any person of colour. Because apparently we're all stupid or criminals, and even if we're not we'll eventually turn because well that's all we're good for!

What that means is, we have to stop focusing on our differences and see each other as people.
The left wing for several years has been focusing on these differences harder than anyone else. And these last few years racism has been on the rise. Before that, it was dying.
As a native Canadian, I know all about racism and adversity. I also know that the systemic racism of the past is no longer there. I know that it is possible to power through and succeed.
My mother was taught, in residential schools that she was nothing, and her culture was bad. It left her with no confidence or self esteem. Regardless she got herself educated, and ended up with a high paying job.
She took the institutions that were so much against her and our people and used them to benefit her.
That’s evidence that racism was dying. She wouldn’t have been able to do that even a decade before. This was in the 80’s and 90’s.
Only way is by teaching our children good from bad and teaching in school no one is born with hate but depending on how you see things as you grow up some people will get influenced to hate because how you were brought up
We can't as much as we would love too. It's just that majority of the people have hate in their heart and violence on their minds. a group of them type of people are hazardous to the rest of us. I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I would be interested to know if this issue were about a person of colour commiting a crime against a white person if you'd feel the same. In fact history proves that the life of a black man in white society is less than a white man. Where for many years men and women were accused of committing offenses against white people they got not trial and stupid long sentences and sometimes death. No one's trying to repeat history but the way the law works is that a crime is treated specifically for what it actually is. I don't see why that is so hard to understand. In order to stand a fair trial the charge has to be appropriate to the crime committed.
Liam Neeson told a story about a female friend being attacked. She claimed the attacker was a black man. Anyways the rage that built in him was so strong that he went out to bludgeoned that man, but having very little knowledge of who he actually was he went on the war path to attack anyone. Thankfully he didn't as he came to his senses but could you imagine, a person that could have looked shady, black. Maybe even acted aggressive when approached by Neeson. Could quite possibly have been seriously hurt or even died that night due to his rage. Now you may say oh it's not the same but it is... As you all keep saying one crime doesn't counteract the other, race factoring in or not. But the fact Neeson thought to attack a black man shows his ignorance. That woman was racially profiled, I can only assume her mugging was due to how she was dressed, her being white which probably came with the assumption that she was financially OK. In a desperate or hateful manner this man attacked her. Had he been caught and sentenced I would hope that his sentence would have taken into account the fact that she was a white woman and he sought her out due to her "financial perks" that to him he probably saw her as a easier target because maybe roughing one woman up may land him the jackpot where as if he attacked a black or other ethnic minority he may have had to attack more than one.
I'm not saying that makes it true or right but depending on the evidence they collect this could be a worthy argument. And it would be valid. It's no different had the attacker been white attacking a black woman, maybe he may think she's an easy target because "well, who cares about us! " you can spin it however.
I really urge you to see a crime for what it is... Stupid, ignorant, troubled, desperate, hateful, racist, competitive, arrogant bullies commit crimes. And they come in all shapes sizes and colours. But every crime is actually different. And it's important when charging a person it's in accordance to what is outlined through a thorough investigation. Race, gender, and crime committed included.
I think a large part of it is the amount of world leaders that enable this behavior. Another part of it is the rise in activism. The more outspoken minority groups are, the more outspoken hate groups become.
This is a very interesting theory. And in the right arena a subject area to discuss further. I do wonder why so many people actually attacked me on this post instead of seeing that actually this is a worrying topic. If you filter through the crap like you did you'll see there's a lack in humanity. And that was the point I was trying to get to. No, because they change what "hate crime" means. Anything can be considered a hate crime. But really that problem and the hostility is the result of the presence of the "Diversity, Inclusion, and Empowerment" people. they need to not have any more influence over society and we need to stop listen to their nonsense, that will move things in the right direction.
I do think things are starting to settle down. People are no longer protesting about race rights and the media are actively trying to portray various racial backgrounds on authentic ways by enlisting the appropriate professionals to do the job. The only thing I can see is East and South East Asian decent professionals need more representation. I'd be interested to see more inclusion of latina or Hispanics here in the UK we hardly see that here. there's definitely more wiggle room needed
I don’t think anything has settled. They’re still protesting about race junk, but the facade is meant to show alignment with Biden, whereas before people were flipping out about Trump. And they typically don’t have to put much effort in or get very loud before people in power are caving to their whims.
The media is an example of that. They make a big deal out of things like representation when that stuff is garbagé.
I don't really think abything more needs to be done on the protesting or activist front. I things have moved to a different position at least where people are open to talking.
I don't see why people would be just "talking". Their opinions haven't changed, they're still incompatible. And they're not "done" protesting because there's no intended goal which can be met. This ideology has always been relentless.

Never has there been an interest like there currently is from the police over such measures. I can say that many within my local community would never have reported crime in the past, for fear of being known as either a snitch or a not being taken seriously. It may seem irritating to you but if you're not committing these crimes I'm not so sure why you'd be so against them pinning down those that try to use all tricks to terrorise others and get away with it. In the event that anyone of us has been a victim of crime I'd like to think the police would use all their resources to hand to catch the bugger, to prevent it happening to someone else. I think this is a step in the right direction you are better able to understand what lines shouldn't be crossed as a member of the public and what will occur in the event you do. The campaigning and activism has definitely helped to raise the profile of the inequality here in the UK. It's been shocking to see just how many people have suffered even at the hands of the police just because they think someone is punching above their weight financially. Those that know the suffering are better able to speak on how things can improve whilst the rest of society, has a opportunity to learn. That's probably the answer really. To just learn from each other instead of telling the other they're wrong and that their experience isn't as it seems. Things only change when people are brave enough to stand up against injustice and that's what currently happening. Change. The divide will only continue if people insist on digging in their heels. No-one is advocating for oppression their fighting for equality.

I care because it’s creeping authoritarian control and false perceptions of reality. The government should be limited in its power over citizens. When it comes to “hate” crimes, they select what constitutes “hate”. So some crimes are now doubly punished when they shouldn’t be, or some things that aren’t crimes becomes crimes because authorities have designated someone or something (abstract or real) sacred. And it has the equal-opposite effect of making “oppressed” groups more emboldened to commit crimes.
