Guys, why do you believe in a "pecking order"?

This belief among men that there's this invisible structure and hierarchy that needs to be obeyed. Where does it come from?

My brother believed in it.. my dad tried forcing me to believe in it. Guys in highschool believed in it. The mentality is celebrated among military types and older business-type men.

In the southern US, it's practically a fucking religion.

Meanwhile here I am wondering what all this monkey business is about.

I wouldn't say NEED's to be obeyed. But there is a hierarchy and to deny it is just ignorant. Every animal species has one and recognizes their place on the totem pole.

"Fuck around and find out" is a good phrase in regards to this subject.

When people are frustrated about how some people can "get away" with this or that and they can't. That's the social totem pole. When someone gets special treatment in a given environment that others don't. That's the totempole.

How it works might be misunderstood but it is very much there. You have a Social bank account with everyone you meet. If you try to make a withdraw when you haven't made enough of a deposit you will face the consequences

Even parents and there kids for example. If they don't spend quality time with their kids and spend too much time disciplining their kids who are acting up when really they just need some love from their parents... those kids are going to be some rebellious kids

That's just surface level thinking. You as a person live by the hierarchy whether you acknowledge it or not. You rank people in your head in terms of levels of importance to you. Level of respect. Level of authority and so on.

When you're at a job and listen to a supervisor. Even if you want to say it's because they pay you. At the end of the day you are abiding by the hierarchy. Humans have banded together to build society solely because we've followed this natural hierarchy in a way that's most useful.

All creatures do this. The ignorance comes from not understanding this is something all beings do. You may not understand how it works and why it works. But acting as if it's not a thing is just ignorance at the end of the day.

You can think it's stupid. Totally your opinion. But to deny a reality is hate to say again ignorant lol

I think it's one of those ideas that keeps getting passed down, but many people don't stop to think about it in any depth. To me it can very much a way to shove a person into a box. Also I think it guys can use the idea to keep others from subverting their spot in a given pecking order. Seen that a lot in high school and I honestly went out of my way to subvert the pecking order to piss people off. Managed to start dating a popular girl and pissed off a several guys higher in the pecking order then I supposedly was by doing so.

Your remark assumes that most people who try to enforce a pecking order have trained.

The only reason most of them aren't crippled is because most martial artists obey the pecking order for some reason.
