America First does NOT mean we get to go to another country and ignore their rule of law. This woman knew the law in Russia forbids weed and risked bringing it anyways. Yes, I believe the penalty is harsh, but remember this is a different country and each country can decide how big or small of a deal they consider an action to be. Most countries in the world are more strict with their laws than the U. S. They are a different society than us and it is on the visitor to respect the society of the host country. Even if she was unaware of the rule of law, ignorance is not a defense in the eyes of the law.

When we were overseas in the military, we were told to honor the laws of the host country. Even if we are in a country we are at war with, we still do not break their laws outside of what a mission dictates. It is commonly accepted among many nations in the world that actions done in war are not criminal acts unless certain rules of war are violated. A classic example would be the war with Afghanistan. Even though we were at war, a military member could not just go up to a man and kill him if they are not part of the conflict. That military member could theoretically still be tried for murder.

If the military can respect a nation's rule of law that they are engaged in war with, then a mere basketball player can leave her weed at home when visiting a country that does not allow weed.

1. Russia has the right to have whatever drug laws it chooses. If you don't like those laws and you travel with something that is illegal, don't go to Russia. Duh!

2. If it was Donald Trump facing a 9 year sentence, would you care? You know you wouldn't.

3. She's a black lesbian basketball player so we are all suppose to care and turn her into a saint? The left never wants people to face the consequences of their behavior. . . as long as they agree with the politics of the person. If they disagree with you, no sympathy.

I wouldn't want some Foreigner coming to America and getting off the hook for breaking our law, so why would I be upset that other countries are doing the same?

Why do people think they can pick and choose which laws they should follow, while they're in another country?

If you're visiting that country, then you follow that country's laws. If a tourist came to the US, and broke our laws, then they should be punished, and vice versa.

If they don't agree with that country's laws, then it's on them not to visit. If they still choose to do so, and break their laws, then it's their own fault. Their choice to visit, their choice to break the law.

Nowhere in there do I see anyone at fault, other than the person in question, so why should I feel bad, or even care, about the choices they made?

Lol she is not getting the same sentence or treatment that murderers get in Russia. She's getting off pretty easy for a convicted smuggler.

Russia has their own laws just like we have ours, and believe it or not, most countries take controlled substance laws, and especially smuggling of said substances much more seriously than we do in the US. When you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes, and she's been in Russia before, so it's not like it was an accident or misunderstanding either.

And sure I'd like to get her extradited to the US, but in exchange for the likes of spies, terrorists, and arms dealers (the people they're asking for)? No way. She's worth a tourist who overstayed their visa or a vodka bootlegger at most.

Honestly I do not think most people in general care, it is only making head lines because she is semi-famous. She had cannabis oil in her luggage so she broke the law even if she meant to or not. The Russians are playing it up in the media on purpose to get something in exchange for her.

Of course its bullshit, but she broke the law. I am retired military and I have a expired top secret security clearance and there is no way I will go to a place like Russia or China. Because I know those guys can pick me up for any reason they want and hold me indefinitely. So honestly I have no idea why anyone would go to Russian in todays climate. I mean she made it easy for them how stupid could you be.
