Republican Alex Jones told lies and conspiracy theories for years about telling the public that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was fake and a hoax and no kids died and all involved were only actors. This is a horrible excuse of a man. Republicans should be ashamed to have him in their party.
To be fair, the guy spent the last two decades uncovering shit that mostly turned out to be true.
I think he's just seen so much shit that he can't think properly anymore. Like he's gone crazy. Back when he used to be kinda normal, he said that he's got so much information coming to him from so many sources, it's hard to keep your composure mentally. And he has to keep track of who told him what so he doesn't accidentally snitch on someone. And he has to figure out truth from lie when everything he hears sounds absolutely insane.
Obviously, this was the moment he should have retired from what he was doing (more like 8 years earlier) but I really don't think Alex Jones is a bad guy. I think he's just had a very stressful job and life for a long time and he thinks that a mentality of "well that can't happen here" is ruining this country.
I don't know if it was right for him to pay all that money. I think he looks insane now. I think it's crazy anyone listens to him anymore. I mean, if Jake Paul said that, I don't think they would be sticking him with a multi million dollar fine.
To prove defamation, you have to prove that Alex knew the information was wrong and spread it anyway. Did they do that? Because I do remember him retracting his statements and apologizing shortly after this happened, supposedly after new evidence was presented. This is why defamation cases are notoriously difficult to prove, and mainly used as a political smearing tool to try and force a settlement. The punishment for defamation is typically a fine roughly equal to damages caused by the defamation itself, so how exactly does Alex Jones saying something to the effect of "Sandy Hook was a false flag attack and a fake" equate to $50,000,000 of damages, and how exactly do you prove that he didn't actually believe it at the time (which means not lying or defaming)? That sounds pretty insane to me, considering that a very high profile defamation suit regarding an abusive woman effectively ruining the life and career of her A-list husband while knowingly lying about it (actual objective damage to a specific party and defamation by definition) over a continuous period of time was a comparatively tiny fraction of that. It seems to me that this is about a lot more than a single incident, but they're using it as an excuse to try and shut him down permanently. It seems like a pretty grievous overstep because it comes across as an extreme weaponization of the justice system, and will likely energize the base he most appeals to.
He'll never have to pay it, there will be years of appeals or negotiations and he doesn't even have that kind of money anyways... his net worth is only around 5 million (that they know for a fact, there may be more but it is under investigation) and he'll be able to protect a decent amount of that by laws protecting certain things.
The families will be lucky to get 3 million out of him, and no doubt his income ability to make money is going to drop drastically.
He also filed bankruptcy now too, and may owe 80 million in debt.
This is why winning a big pay out and actually collecting on it are two totally different things.
I have never really heard of the guy though, as I don't follow any news, media, social media, but he sounds nuts to me.
Yes. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean you can’t be sued for defamation. Lies that cause provable damage you can be held financially responsible for. Jones pushes fictional conspiracy theories for profit without caring who he hurts. He’s now reaping what he sowed. These cases will bankrupt him…. and deservedly so. Conspiracy theories have become a poison upon this country. It’s a modern day McCarthyism. It needs to stop. Rudy Giuliani, Sydney Powell and Mike Lindell will meet the same fate for pushing election lies. Keep hitting these fraudsters where it hurts…. their pocketbooks.

Alex Jones did mislead a lot of His followers. Making a statement that all the victims were actors was first of all ridiculous second of all, Who in their right mind would say something like that? It is enough that He would constantly cast the conspiracy theories every time His chosen candidate didn't get elected, but to make a false accusation when there are families who lost their children in that shooting was yelling fire in a crowded theater. It was laughable when He shouted His conspiracy theories when His Political Party lost a presidential election which was no more than sour grapes. The Conservatives didn't like it when Trump was said to have an alliance with Vladimir Putin and was assisted by the Russians so He can win the election in that case the conservatives got a taste of their own medicine because they would always allege that it was a communist plot whenever a Democrat were elected into the White House. Alex Jones by His own admission is psychotic, and He put his foot in His Mouth when He said the Kids that got killed in the Sandy Hook Massacre were actors, Hell Yeah He should pay.
So I've been hearing about this and I remember when networks dropped him completely a few years ago. I have never, ever liked Alex Jones as he is also anti-Semitic. Having said that, his conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook shooting are offensive, ridiculous, and deplorable. But I'm not entirely sure he should be paying anyone $50 million for his idiotic thoughts. Unless the things he said directly attacked those families or their kids, or he accused any of them of something that is defaming or completely false, I'm not sure him having to pay anything exactly applies.

If the kids did not die, why are they still alive? Where are they today? Certainly none have disappeared from the face of the Earth. Unless they were all cremated their caskets will have bodies with DNA to prove they were indeed dead.

He's a charlatan and a scam artist. He knows he tells lies. He knows his lies hurt people but he doesn't care. It has nothing to do with his political affiliation. He's an excellent grifter but his grift finally caught up with him. The audacity and cowardice of this man is unparalleled. He chases that bag no matter who he has to step on to get it. I think more people like him should get called out and face charges.

I think the verdict was correct but the monetary award is too high, and may be reduced on appeal. I'm just wondering what the parents will do with the money since their stated goal was to get him to stop claiming Sandy Hook was fake, and he's already done that.

He deserves jail time too. What he did borders on "hate speech" rather than free speech. In my view, it's like being a "flat-earther" and preaching the Earth is flat. Sure, that's free speech based on no evidence. You're pretty harmless and viewed as stupid on the subject, and a bit crazy. But if you get elected President and declare by executive order that "all non-believers in a flat Earth will be jailed, tried and executed if they don't convert", that's not free speech anymore.

He was found guilty in this case and has many upcoming cases of the same. He told lies and called the parents actors in a horror fake event--all for only money and to fool gullible Republicans. This is a civil case, not a criminal one. Defamation laws date back to the founding of this country. You’ve never been free to slander someone if they can meet the burden of proof. Even Jones himself didn’t bother mounting a first amendment defense. He just didn’t count on these families fighting back. What they endured after losing their children was shameful. They deserve every penny.
I am. Yes he did lie under oath several times during his testimony but he was being sued for defamation. Specifically for pushing a fictitious conspiracy about the Sandy Hook shooting being a hoax. The families who lost children that day were continually harassed, received death threats, had to move from their homes and hire personal security as a result. They were able to demonstrate that they suffered damage and had their lives upended by Jones’ lies. You have to pay for that under US law. The first amendment doesn’t protect you against defamation. You engage in that at your own risk.
I would disagree that media lies all the time. The media is certainly biased and spins the facts to support their own narrative but usually they are t reporting outright lies. However, the media can sued for defamation if you can prove they lied and you suffered personal damage as a result. They aren’t immune from that.
But in the case of Iraq, the lies were coming from the Bush administration. Those weren’t created by the media. They just reported what the government was saying. They didn’t have access to classified intelligence to dispute it. The Covid vaccine was highly effective in the beginning but the virus mutated so quickly that it began to wane, something the media did fully report. I don’t think those are good examples of what your saying at all.

I don’t disagree that they sometimes rush to judgement and have to retract or correct stories. Journalistic standards have absolutely slipped. However, the mainstream media is nowhere near the level of an Alex Jones. His business is peddling fiction. Gender and racial inequality has been documented in numerous studies, even if the gap is closing. I know there are people who don’t want to believe that racism and misogyny play a role in society but common sense says it has to have an effect. Just like bias plays a role in the media, it also affects how everyday people behave.

Saying that an event didn't happen isn't defaming anyone because lying about an event isn't a crime. Jones was well in his right to say that the event was a false flag.
It would be a defamation crime if he said that the family member who sued him was the ones who caused it because shooting up a school *is* a crime.

Yes they did. The case was filed in CT which makes it the home court. Also, the lies and conspiracy theories were national. Alex Jones has many other cases coming up against him. I hope he loses everything since he got rich off of the horrible school killing. Too bad no jail time can be added.
