Realistically speaking can America fall into totalitarianism or that is just hot talk?

There's this theory out there if Trump loses the presidential election in 2024, he will still declare himself president and with the backing of congress controlled by Republicans if they win the majority in the 2022 mid terms, and divided military in support of Trump, that Trump can possibly force himself into power and rule by decree.

Not in that way, no- Congress can't "declare" someone President, and if they tried, garnering military support would require moving the military back here to do it, since none of them are stationed here, as per Federal law (the English lost the Revolution in no small part because of that decision, so the US chose to... do basically the same thing). The States would mobilize their National Guards to assist the police, who'd promptly arrest them all. More notably, Donald Trump is not an authoritarian- the "follow the tenth Amendment and let the States set their own Covid policies" and "take my ludicrously insistent claims of election fraud to court and let the LAW decide" guy is one of the LEAST authoritarian Presidents we've ever had.

He's hated so vehemently because he unambiguously proved, beyond ANY reasonable doubt, that the Democratic party isn't the party of the working class any more. That's really the only reason for their hatred.

Now, the guy in the Oval Office NOW is a man who's spent the last half-century waging an open war on the Bill of Rights (all he needs to do is find a way to quarter troops in people's houses, and he'll be ten for ten), so you might think I'd claim HE'S more likely to try something- but I don't think so. The descent into totalitarianism is rarely rapid; it begins slowly, with an abrading of rights and freedoms, gets amped up with exaggerated threats after a crisis, and only falls into final place when people have grown accustomed to living in a borderline-authoritarian hellhole anyway. Biden's trying- see his using the Oklahoma City Bombing as an excuse to push his proto-Patriot Act, the Omnibus Counterterrorism bill of 1995, which he introduced two months BEFORE the bombing, or his Gulf of Tonkining a "campus rape crisis", which took place only in his imagination, to push his "dear colleague" letter that did for collegiate due process protections what the Bolsheviks did for the Czar- but the less directly forms of political power in this country won't let him beyond a certain nebulous point.

And that's the root of it: it's not totalitarianism that we're headed for, it's oligarchy. In some ways, we're already there. Governments "suspending" inalienable rights? Forcing people out of work, then mandating eviction moratoriums to impoverish landlords, concentrating MORE power in the hands of massive real estate companies and essentially annihilating the middle class? Shutting down energy supply lines and establishing huge barriers to entry for newcomers to the field, even as third world energy demands explode? Forbidding the sale of seeds, preventing people from growing their own food? Public acceptance of all of the above?

It could happen. But I don't see it happening like it has though out human history. I don't see it being a shift created by people in our government. I see it as a shift into totalitarianism via people such as Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg using their poppet our government to build totalitarian state with them in charge. But at some point they will fight each other for ultimate power in war for complete control. Whoever manages to win that will take over everything a then whatever is left will be a slip into full totalitarianism with the leader at the helm.

While very likely, I don't think it will be through Trump. It will probably be thanks to some other dimwit. The US has already been steeping towards authoritarianism for quite a while.

If anything the far left is more prone to dangerous authoritarianism. Just look at how corrupt twitter was. They were literally taking bribes for providing a platform and silencing political opponents.

Honestly though, I think your two party system is hopelessly corrupt. People just dogpile Trump because he didn't have the usual easy to pull puppet strings that establishment candidates usually have.

It's a sad state of affairs when a freely acting politician is so rare that he's considered a threat to the system just for existing.

Maybe to some extent in certain states, but nationwide? Currently, no. Not with such a heavily armed populace nor with the mentality of most of Middle America. And the military would undoubtedly have officers, at least below the Brass, and NCO's who would flip the bird at the illegal orders necessary to create such a thing.

Yes, but I highly doubt that scenario. Republicans favor small limited government. Also the military won't back someone who lost an election. Not to mention most of the heads of federal agencies are never Trumpers. If Trump wanted to become a dictator he would at least have to rewin the presidency.

I think the POSSIBILITY is always present. You could make the argument that we inched towards it with the anti- Muslim sentiment and formation of homeland security after 9/11. You could say the potential was thier during the Trump administration. And you could say the potential is here right now under Biden with the Jan. 6 witchhunt.

This has happened many times throughout our nation's history. And will only happen if good men remain silent. It's why a free press is so important.
