Was he some major figure in political art? No- he was just a Chinese rice farmer in 1904, when some British anthropologists were documenting life in China. Back in the day, getting your portrait painted was a big deal- it was the once-in-a-lifetime chance to get your likeness preserved. The culture of that serious solemnity lasted into early photography; LONG after exposure times were down to a second or two, the attitude lasted. Rural Chinese folks, of course, didn't know any of that, and so happily went into goofball mode.
But back before photography (which would include Jackson, as he died in 1845), it was ALL portraits, so...
