Help me understand why there’s a tip option at coffee places?

Leave them a dollar or don’t, whatever. Why does it offend you when someone has an opportunity to make more money, particularly in a minimum wage type job? Do you get off on seeing others struggle? I don’t understand the rage behind this.

It was just a cash option it wouldn’t bother me one bit. The option on a card is irritating because it makes you feel like a dick if you don’t do it.

I see. That’s fair enough, I get that aspect of it. I’m guessing we’ve just reached a point where most transactions are via card now, fewer and fewer people are carrying paper currency, plus Covid has a lot of people feeling like cash is “icky” lmao. I like to give a tip, but sometimes there’s no tipping option on the card transaction, and then I don’t have any cash, or no small bills. So I feel bad in those moments, I guess this kind of thing caters to a customer like me, and I’m sure it’s to help the employees as well. There’s an Indian restaurant I go to about once a week for takeout, and I’m friendly with the lady who brings the order. I used to get the paper debit card slip where I could write in my own tip. Now they have a new machine with an electronic signature you do with a stylus, and when it gets to the tip, it gives you “18%/20%/25%/No Tip”…. and this is like a $100 order I’m picking up. I’m a generous guy, but those are sit-down table service rates. She walks like a hundred feet to and from the kitchen, she probably only punched the order up, obviously the kitchen made the food. I can’t justify $18-25 extra for that, other people are chipping in on this too, they don’t want to pay that much extra. So now I have to do “No Tip” and try to remember to have some small bills on me. Definitely feels like she’s watching me while I do it too, lmao.

Starbucks got some backlash over the tip option on the app. I generally dont unless its a mom and pop coffee shop.

Frankly tipping is more of a western American thing, but if you got to places in Europe or Latin America tips are not a thing or automatically included even if you have bad service, because the standards are very high.

@LiamJHayden coffee shops are extremely profitable and popular, their skills are already marketable. Starbucks makes a ton of money off their service.
