Is the imbalance that is being created in the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia worrying?

The balance of power is today extremely unfavorable to Armenia, so much so that one can worry about its survival. What would be the geopolitical consequences of such a situation?

The sad truth is that when empires fall apart, they do not fall apart along nice neat nation-state lines, and bloodshed follows. (examples: Austria - Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, a few former British colonies).

This also explains much of the current Ukraine War. Nearly half of the on paper Ukraine is ethnic Russian, and they have been shat upon by the ethnic Ukrainians who have gone hyper-nationalist. Of course, all through the Soviet Empire years, ethnic Ukrainians were shat upon by the Soviet system, but that was not the fault of the average ethnic Russian, who was just a pawn in that system too. The areas of the on paper Ukraine that Russia has taken? They did not conquer them as much as they were invited in. (After all the Russian military performance attacking the rest of Ukraine has been poor).

So it is with Armenia and Azerbaijan. The lines of the "Soviet Republics" (sic) were not drawn with the nationalities in mind, but rather with the agendas of "The Party" in mind.

And some areas are just a jumble of ethnics and any rise in nationalism among one of them, no matter how understandable, will alienate the other (s). (The Balkans)

@julie4 By the way, I have to give Gaullist France credit for carving up "French West Africa" and "French Equatorial Africa" without fighting between the new nations. (Still lots of fighting and sadness within them, but you can't have everything).

Well, DeGaulle WAS good for France. He just didn't "play well with others" as the teachers in the UK and USA schools say. There was and is still a feeling in the rest of NATO that France just was not a "team player". (Do those concepts translate? Apologies if Anglicisms and Americanisms in words do not translate well).

Armenia has always been bullied throughout its history. First by the Turks and now by the Azeris. They've always been jealous because Armenians were more advanced and successful then them.

The West always has a history of siding with the wrong side. I am happy Biden officially recognized the Armenian genocide, but extremely disappointed that Israel gave Azerbaijan drones.

But what makes me most mad is the double standards. Azerbaijan didn't get the same kind of backlash for invading Nagorno-Karabakh as Russia did for invading Ukraine. In fact, the Western media was largely silent about the conflict.

But since the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan has been creating problems for its neighbors. Who cares what the UN thinks, or how the borders were drawn up after the Soviet Union collapsed? Borders can change. I don't understand why Azerbaijan is so insistent on keeping land that's inhabited by people it hates. It seems like they want the land, but they want to kick the Armenians out. The borders should never have been drawn up so poorly, but the damage is already done, and it upsets me that the West is largely silent on the issue and failing to call out the hypocrisy of the Azeris. We can't allow bully countries to have their way, else it will pave the way form another genocide/conflict. If they get Nagorno Karabakh, they won't stop there. Next they will try to take the lands in Georgia they claim are theirs, and eventually all of Armenia. It will be another Russia-Ukraine. We can't be giving bullies the upper hand.

Western countries are so stupid. They haven't learned from history that nothing good ever comes from backing Muslims.

Armenia must withdraw from the occupied territories. Also, Armenia massacred civilians in Azerbaijan with the support of Russia. see Khojaly 1992.

Ok. I just read your post. Thanks for being thorough.
I agree with your opinion about the west. The US gets involved in things we shouldn’t and it’s always for the benefit of the war machine and not the civilians dying left and right.
