Is there a regionalism that you really don't like?

Regionalisms are words and phrases that are favored in a specific region, but rarely used elsewhere. For example: In the Northeast, athletic shoes are called sneakers. Elsewhere, tennis shoes is the common term.

Personally, I can't stand the word y'all. I'm watching a TV show based in Nashville and cringing every time I hear it. To be clear, I don't like the one word, not Southern accents overall.

I thought of another one... In my region, carbonated beverages are called pop. We consider soda to be a four letter word. The worst!

I think what you're referring to are dialects. We've got about 6 here in wales which really confuses everyone. It's more than just accent the words are often completely different and everyone argues their word is the real word. Whoa beside any tourist who mixes them up.
You'll be pleased to know we all call it pop though.

I don't think it's a case of disliking any but it can take your brain a few minutes to adjust.

Dialects are different versions of the same language, which you are correct in describing. You speak English, but in your own dialect.

Regionalisms are terms used in a specific region, not universally, within the same dialect. In the US, we speak American English, but what the word we use for a submarine sandwich varies based on where you live. Sub, hero, grinder, and hoagie are all correct, but not used nationally.

What you are speaking too is called Colloquial or Colloquialism: a word or phraseology that is commonplace within a certain language, geography, region, or historical era. They display personality of people groups.

Regionalism and colloquialism are synonyms. Regardless, this question has nothing to do with semantics.

It would behoove you to expand your definition in your questions as you can see dialect etc conclusions were drawn. And they manifested into People groups. Semantics mattered greatly here... Obviously, this question had everything to do with semantics and its place in effective communication. Have a good one. :-)

Different regions can offer variety of different languages, culture, food etc which can be enjoyed. What I dislike about regionalism is that the sense of superiority people hold just because they belong to a certain region.

Opting to use generic terms instead of your native regionalisms can help prevent these snap judgements. Just a thought.
