What’s with all these morons who talk to the police instead of asking for a lawyer?

The police are not your friend. They will try to trick you to get evidence to use against you in court. The only thing you should say is, I am officially requesting a lawyer. Once you say something like that, they’re not allowed to continue.

People often think they’re clever enough to talk their way out of a legal jam but it’s a terrible idea. You’re only feeding them information that can be used against you and they are trained interrogators. People generally are guilty of the crimes they are arrested for but you should make the government do the legwork to prove it. Ask for an attorney.

Lawyers are no better... they just cost you more, is all.

Also, you're rather naïve if you think it's like in the movies. You DO talk to the police, just not incriminating yourself further, and by asking for a legal representative -nicely.

The police ARE allowed to do what they like - if you give them cause to. A beatdown may ensure if you're too aggressive, You'll likely be dead, the worst they get is a lesser paycheck.

They can and will continue, you just don't have to say anything back. Demand a lawyer, evoke your right to remain silent, and stfu and let the lawyer do the talking
