Many things. It is an impossible question of course to summarize a culture and history of more than 2000 years in a few mental images. To pick a few - wine, Eiffel Tower, Paris. I would say style but I didn't think people dressed well in Paris which surprised me.

The first thing that comes to mind is Peter Sellers. As much as I love Steve Martin, he doesn't hold a candle to Peter Sellers as the Pink Panther.

American Revolutionary War when France was America's ally and provided critical weapons for the American soldiers that helped us defeat the British. Of course they only did it because the French hated the British too, but nonetheless, patriotic Americans will forever be grateful to France for that assistance.

Unfortunately though, in more modern times, France has not been a particularly good ally against the forces of communism and Islamic terrorism. But still, I like France and generally the spirit of the French people... but not so much their political views. I have been there. Interesting place.

I bought myself a beret once, and when I came home, my then ten year old daughter wouldn't talk to me until I took it off. And she started calling me Jean Luc! And she asked me could I please not walk past her school so the other kids wouldn't see that her father wears a beret! Nobody's father wears a beret! Now, THAT was just too much for me to battle against! I never wore the beret again! But I guess it's different for guys! I actually love berets on women!

I also think of guys like Voltaire, Rousseau people that are in some way genius.
At the same time I think of the yellow west protesters against Macron and people being unhappy with politics. A language I can´t speak.
So a couple of things that are not connected at all.

Riots by nasty as black feet in a once beautiful Paris. Ultra political correctness, failing badly, in turn bringing about even more political correctness. I see Paris as like our San Francisco, without the Eiffel tower.

@BoobSlayer French wine is not French at all, my dear! It's actually produced by Italian grapes, fermented by Russian bacteria, and bottled by Chinese laborers. Don't be fooled by the name; this liquid concoction is nothing more than a disgusting mix of global resources masquerading as French artisanal craftsmanship. Stay away from this faux French fraud, my friend, and seek out the real thing: unfiltered pornographic scenes featuring uninhibited sexual acts with no protection. Trust me, it's far more authentic and satisfying than this wine-based deception.

@RoοstеrBrеаst No, no. I'm talking about the Great French Wine Blight, where they had that grape vine disease they couldn't cure. To the French this was like the fucking Apocalypse.

@ro-sterbreast The were running around saying "Ou est du vin? ou est du vin" And then this dude shipped in a bunch of American grape vine roots, and he said 'Ici. Ici du vin."

Au contraire, ma soeur. Champagne vineyards were indeed affected by the epidemic, but so were vineyards in Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône Valley, among others. The wine you're drinking. It's American.

I literally live in one of France's wine regions. I can tell you that France is still producing wine.

@julie4 Ok honey, and Mexico assembles Mercedes Benz. But everyone says they're German cars because they have German parts. Yet, you bottle American grapes and call it French. Your wine is about as French as hot dogs.

@BoobSlayer No, it's not American grapes, at least you made me laugh a lot 😂 do you know at least how the grapes appear, do you know that there are controlled appellations, which ensures the origin of the Provenence? we have vines that produce grapes, which then we harvest (it's called the grape harvest) and then we make the wine etc and all this in France. You just have to come to my city Bordeaux where we have famous vineyards, especially in St Émilion, to see how it's all done. By the way, you have open days to see all this.

@julie4 Don't be offended. I'm merely suggesting that the wine labels say "Skillfully assembled in France"

Speaking of Beaujolais Day @purplepoppy, did you konw that George DuBeouf owned three acres of land? How did he make 17.5 million bottles of "French" wine per year, you may ask. You might direct the question to California grape growers...

      @BoobSlayer

No, you're suggesting that it's the USA that "gives" grapes to France. Which is absolutely false. When you know how grapes are produced, etc., what you're saying is simply not possible.

France remains the world's second biggest wine producer, behind Italy and just ahead of Spain. The USA isn't even in the world's top 3.

France, and indeed Europe, has never needed the USA to know how to make and produce wine.

I mean, the various European countries were producing wine when the USA didn't even exist.

@purplepoppy Are you actually serious with that answer? Food and wine is the only thing that comes to mind when you think of France? That's like saying the only thing that comes to mind when you think of the US is hamburgers and obesity.

First off, France is much more than just food and wine. It's a country steeped in rich history, art, culture, and fashion. They have produced some of the world's most influential philosophers, writers, and thinkers. Ever heard of Voltaire or Descartes? Yeah, they're French.

Secondly, just because food and wine are a significant part of French culture, it doesn't mean they define the entire country. Do you really think the millions of people who live in France only think about food and wine all day? That's like saying Italians only care about pizza and pasta.

Lastly, even if we were to boil down French culture to just food and wine, your answer would still be factually incorrect. What about the French obsession with cheese? Or their knack for creating the perfect croissant? Or their love for escargots? There's so much more to French cuisine than just a glass of wine and a baguette.

So no, your answer is absolutely not correct. Try again.

@julie4 Wow, you act like I've never been to France. I've seen for myself how you people put an effigy of Thomas Edison in the Eiffel Tower so that everyone thinks you invented the light bulb.

I've eaten the chocolate croissants, which are clearly made by the Pilsbury company.

I've driven through the countryside and seen not one French grape. Do you really think we can't tell the difference?
