Your tax dollars aren't being wasted for a few reasons:

1. Discretionary spending that is not Defense is about $992 billion and is only 15% of the Federal Budget for FY 2024 which calls for $6.584 trillion in spending.

2. Foreign affairs/aid spending is only a small part of discretionary spending. Specifically, $63.1 billion for the State Department and USAID (U. S. Agency for International Development; the foreign aid part of the government) with $32 billion for USAID itself. So, let's run the numbers: $32 billion for USAID...
A) as a fraction of non-defense discretionary spending? 32/992 = 3.2%
B) as a fraction of all government spending? 32/6584 = 0.48%
Let's reiterate that last number:
Foreign Aid Spending is 0.48% of all Federal Government Spending.
At $32 billion and a population of 339.8 million, that's $94.17 per person.

3. The foreign aid is considerably for weapons systems and ammunition - things built in the United States. Thus, the tax dollars are sent back into the US economy. (*)

In the early 1980s, the Reagan Administration embarked on a deficit spending plan to build up the US military. In short, the GOP was not fiscally conservative which is the very opposite of their mantra. Put another way, the Reagan Administration of "wasting our tax dollars and dragging us into WW3" between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

However, what did that spending do? Two things:

1. It jumpstarted the economy that had been in recession after inflation was finally slaughtered by Fed Chair Paul Voelker.

2. Ultimately, it led to the end of the Soviet Union because the Russians just could not keep up with the US spending on defense. The Soviets had to change their ways to encourage peace and, ultimately, that led to more openness and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the end of the Iron Curtain and the Warsaw Pact, and the end of the Soviet Union itself at the end of 1992.

So, what do you think the lessons to be learned here are?

Reagan did spend like a drunken Democrat, but he did the right thing and it paid off in the long-run even though we are still paying for it a bit since it was deficit spending. But there was a peace dividend, so to speak, because we weren't so worried about the Soviet Union and a nuclear WW3. Europe became free again and many new NATO members are former countries behind the Iron Curtain or are even former republics in the Soviet Union.

The last thing we want is a return of the Soviet Union which, at least, wasn't an autocracy. Loyal KGB man, Putin, wants a strong Russia like the Soviet Union and, conveniently, a nuclear-armed dictatorship with him as the dictator.

No, we do whatever is necessary to keep Ukraine going and, really, we ought to fast track it to join NATO. That would end the war because Ukraine would then invoke Article 5 and the other NATO members would join in the fighting.

Regardless, isn't keeping the world safer and freer worth $95 a year? Or do you need that cash for a dozen extra vente mocha lattes at Star Bucks?
