Is angling / fishing as a recreational activity cruel?

Do you think it's cruel to catch fish just for fun in the same way some people hunt and shoot animals or is it in someway different?

Shooting animals isn't cruel if it's done properly, a one shot drop. It's when people only wound it then have to track it down that it becomes cruel.

As for fishing I don't believe that the hook causes a problem because the damage is comparable to what the fish experiences through daily feeding. Most modern anglers do everything they can to protect the fish before they release or dispatch it humanely. Mishandling a fish is generally frowned up although you do get some idiots.

I do think it's cruel to fish and hunt just for pleasure. You are causing stress and pain to a living breathing creature. If you are hunting for food or survival as long as it's a quick and mostly painless death that is acceptable.

To put it simply, You don’t eat giraffes but you do eat fish. Once you catch a fish, your reward is to either let it go or eat it. If you shoot a giraffe, it’ll slowly die or you take pictures of the giraffe’s life leaving its body.


They are not comparable. One is for survival and the other is for sport 🤷🏾‍♀️

In my opinion, unless you are hunting or fishing for food for yourself or your family, it is a cruel and inhumane activity.

It depends on how high the animal is on the food chain. Rodents, insects and fish reaaally don't matter to most people since they're just food for other creatures
