An interesting question. I guess we would need to define what constitutes a "world" war. There is certainly no lack of conflict right now.

A world war requires countries projecting power. Right now the only three countries who can project power (via logistics) are the U. S., France and Great Britain. Russia has proven an inability to protect power and the Chinese are still in the infancy stages of blue water operations.

The U. S. has more experience and capability of power projection than any other country.

I think we’re a lot closer than most of the general public realize. Taiwan and Russian movement in Europe are of concern. The situation in the Middle East is not improving and Iran could spark it quickly over a seemingly impulsive act. When - not if, but WHEN - China moved militarily on Taiwan I think we will be as close as we’ve been since the Cuban Missile Crisis and how the sitting US President and Navy (most likely) respond in the initial phases could be the spark.

A lot closer than we should be. Russia trying to reconstruct the Soviet Empire. North Korea producing fearsome armaments. Iran and its proxies threatening the stability of middle east.

russia is trying but... got stopped with heavy losses.
n. korea HAD atom bombs for years but didn't use it , so no fear.
iran proxies have been active for decades nothing new. hezbolla etc.
the exception was iran stole a ship. if nobody reacts they will get worse.
magicly the defense of its nuclear facility got hurt, by someone so iran is deterd too.

We are aLways close to WWIII, ever since WWII ended we dropped in to the Cold War and it has not really stopped. It used to be fairly clear in that all western countries were against Soviets, that has changed in that the theatres have become far larger and fucked up politics make things harder to guarantee who is actually against who.

oh cold stopped around 1987 it ended, afghanistan became minor, soon ending in 1989. soviet ended 1991. the calm lasted for decades until obama was a wimp n didn't respond when russia stole ukraine in 2014. democrat plan!

What's on the line today? Taiwan? Maybe Ukraine at the same time Finland was added to nato. That's a net loss for Russia.

Probably closer than we have been in q while. Middle East is close to all out war. Europe is close to all out war. Asia is getting their in a few spots. Rest of the world are kind of watching and the US is largely making things worse in certain areas *cough* ukraine *cough*

iraq wars were not world war. this can repeat with iran even all out alliance.
russia is busy in ukraine so no danger in Europe.
taiwan terrain will slow china so china won't attack taiwan. no worry.
but i agree biden administration made these local problems worse instead of good policy. they mismanaged.

@strateguy632 it is more after Russia finishes with Ukraine. Logically they have no choice but to invade farther west. Ukraine gives them access to trade routes that they can use year round. But there are several countries between those ports and the open ocean. Whether or not russia is willing to engage in such a venture I reckon depends on the support they get from their growing allyship with China

If we are you needn't worry about it. Large scale conflicts are over. Because the great powers of the world know all to well to unleash that genie will be the end of us all. The only way that happens if someone is pushed to the point of utter desperation. And if it gets to that point (the nuclear option). It will happen too fast for you to hear about it probably.
