Why is this country so obsessively crazy about trump?

In a word; it's because of "ego."

Trump highlights a lot of very serious problems about our country/society that I think a lot of people knew but were unwilling to speak up about. And now that he's done that, there's a tremendous amount of ego on both sides of the aisle that have a lot invested in their point of view.

The Anti-Trump people have spent 9-10 years screaming that Trump would destroy everything, and they've been hollering, and irreparably damaging the country's infrastructure and institutions to prove their point. Unfortunately, the Democrats have proven themselves to be extremely objectively wrong, and revealed that they are incredibly abusive people in the process.

The Pro-Trump people have spent the last 9-10 years saying that the country has already been destroyed, and they see Trump as a way to clean house. Unfortunately, the Trumpers also tend to want things like Christian nationalism; which we very much do NOT need in this country.

Both sides are unquestionably cults.

The problem is that both sides have spent so much time and energy saying and doing a lot of extremely unhinged things in a state of delusion. It would be really fucking awkward for anyone on either end of the spectrum to acknowledge that their side has taken things too far.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is totally a thing! I've spoken with friends who are otherwise VERY intelligent people who have literally said to me "if he gets in again he isn't going to leave!"

I was like, "what are you talking about? There's not mechanism for that. It'll be his second term and he's ineligible after that. The president doesn't get to decide when elections take place in America. There's no mechanism to change ANY of that short of an amendment to the Constitution and there's no way that can pass. Also, he WAS previously president for 4 years and he ISN'T RIGHT NOW! So clearly he can leave? What in the holy hell are you even talking about?"

But yeah--people have lost their fucking minds.

He makes losers feel like they can win something if they just stick together while making people who managed to keep their head above water feel like even are after all their work they are still susceptible to being dragged down by the collective effort of a bunch of losers united in their spite. It's maddening on both ends but also, I'll admit, a little bit hilarious..
