why is elderly person still working? thank God i live in netherlands
Most companies got away from pension plans and a lot of people failed to save for retirement. Some people unfortunately ended up in very low paying jobs but a lot just did not save anything, preferring to take trips to Disneyworld and buy BMWs and send their kids to expensive private schools. By the time they reached retirement age they do not have enough money to pay their bills and social security is not enough to live on.
Also there is a problem with age discrimination in America. If you are older than 50 and become unemployed it is very difficult to find another job in their field and have to resort to stocking supermarket shelves or being the official greeter at Wal Mart.
Thank god you live in the Netherlands? What’s that got to do with anything, retirement age is moving to 67,
In the Netherlands you are encourage to work beyond retirement age.
Today, approximately 236,000 pensioners in the Netherlands are in paid employment.
Ahhh…so their government doesn’t give a dang, either. 😂😂😂
@SweetJoyGirl no governments really care about their people, we exist to be taxed to pay for roads, healthcare, education etc, also there is a huge bow wave of population increase where those retiring would or will exceed those working or something along those lines, hence most places putting it up to 67 years, I think the US you can actually retire at 62.
@ Asker, ref your update, then have a word with your own government before you start trolling everyone else.
The Netherlands offers several advantages for the elderly and retirees compared to the United States, primarily due to its comprehensive approach to aging and long-term care.
Universal Long-Term Care: The Netherlands has a well-established mandatory long-term care system that provides universal coverage, ensuring that all elderly citizens receive the care they need. This system is supported by public funds and compulsory insurance premiums, creating a sense of shared responsibility.
Life Expectancy and Health: Dutch citizens enjoy a higher life expectancy, averaging 82.2 years compared to 78.8 years in the U. S. This difference is attributed to better healthcare and social support systems.
Pension System: The Netherlands boasts one of the best pension systems globally, with a three-pillar structure that includes state, workplace, and private pensions. This system offers financial security for retirees.
Infrastructure and Lifestyle: The Netherlands has a world-class infrastructure and a bicycle-friendly culture, promoting an active lifestyle. It ranks high in happiness and well-being, making it an attractive place for retirees.
236,000 working? Yes, out of a population of 3.3 MILLION!! That's 7.1% in case you were wondering.
Our government doesn’t give a dang.

Because social security has been spent on various wars and other socialist programmes. Also a lot of people lost their private pensions through the years through company fraud, company bankruptcy.
Then there's inflation meaning people's pensions are no longer worth what they should be and of course homeowners have to pay ever increasing property taxes or risk losing their homes so they need an income. Then there is health insurance which is expensive and if you or a relative have a preexisting condition your health insurance company may choose not to renew or honor you insurance plan knowing you either yiu can't afford to take them to court or will die before you can. They might have had to help their children and grandchildren. Their children may have taken advantage of them when they tried to help.
Pensions and social security are a giant pot of money that the government & corporations want to get access to, there are many ways to steal
Because we live in a Lord of the Flies rapacious capitalism where you can't accumulate assets for retirement, your labor is your only resource and there effectively is NO social safety net worth that name. Daily life in USA is dystopian, soul crushing and cruel. I've told my kids to live abroad when done with uni and suggested Netherlands as a top 3 destination. You people know how to LIVE we USA Americans only know how to EXIST.
My father worked until he was 83 years old, and only stopped then because his company's insurance company couldn't insure him... according to their tables, he should be dead. He was "politely fired".
A person should work as long as they want, so long as they are still mentally and physically able to do the job.
Idrk what the context is here but we have a lot of people who were really bad with their money.
It's a huge country and you can blow money as easily as you made it here. Many people in the USA are financially illiterate. They didn't prepare or think ahead in many cases.
I imagine many European countries will have the exact same thing in their future generations.
Why? Because some of us have wives who spend like terminally ill drunken Democratic sailors, so we have such a mountain of debt that it will never be paid-off.
... oh, and we have to pay for health care.
I think most people can and should work up to age 70, with medical exceptions. My grandfather was gold watched at 65. He worked part time to mid 80's, despite having two pensions. Military and civilian.
Madness. 60 should be the max. Men only make it to 78 on average
They're working to subsidize the defense of your country, because your government can't be bothered to protect its people from any real threats.
Enjoy your Thalidomide!
Big corporations and government destroyed our country's "honor" and now it's all about money.
Pensions are a thing of the past unless you're a government employee.
They wanna follow biden example of working when old.
But really workers deserve breaks and old need to work because of inflation.
It's where the "pecariat,"i. e., workers toiing in jobs lacking benefits and security abound.
Small pension and boredom are the two biggest reasons
Our government is busy spending our money subsidizing your national defense. You’re welcome.
So what have you done to prevent that misguided policy?
@DrPepper12 leave them to defend their own interests.
Not very communitarian...
@DrPepper12 don’t give a shit.
So you do SUPPORT Hobbes? Man vs man and survival of the fittest! No TY
@DrPepper12 You support giving your money to foreign countries inhabited by douches like OP who turn around and bitch about an American working to support him.
You don't know 💩 about what I support
I support reducing foreign aid but that would put Americans out of work in the defense industry and every Congress person has defense industry related jobs in their district so it'll ll never happen.
@DrPepper12 you didn’t care about the people put out of work when you were cheering the Covid lockdowns. Spare me your crocodile tears
No I didn't. Public health requires temporary draconian measures. No tears spilled here!
@DrPepper12 yeah we know. You were happy to fuck over small business owners over the sniffles.
No. I know several who died. I assure you it was not from the sniffles.
@DrPepper12 yeah. It was 4 comorbidities
One of my works janitors was 89. He died lol
why was he working tho at that age
why were his kids not helping
