I turned 30 and still cannot afford homeownership. When will people wake up?

I just turned 30, and I am certainly not living what most consider the American Dream.

I recently lost my job, once again, in July. My industry, once considered safe, is no longer. Mass layoffs have occurred, and the job market is a mess. Do I really want to have to return to school again at age 30 to switch carrers out of tech into something different? Hell no!

Although I don't know very many people around my age, I will say the majority of the ones I do know are either renting with roommates or still living at home.

Everyone is tight financially.

I do have my blessings and I am grateful for those.

Man even I can't afford an apartment, a townhouse, a house or even what the Yanks would call a condo.
I think the world's best inspiration came from The Santa Clauses 2022 by Disney, where Scott Calvin played by the illustrious Tim Allen comes across the middle aged woman who says she now sleeps on her parents couch and orders online anything she likes from online shopping straight to her door to her couch lol 🛋️ or sofa for you British not soda lol 😂😆

Or man, you could always try rent sharing : or multi house living with strangers, another couple, I dunno man, peace ✌🏻🕊️

This is becoming commonplace for a lot of people too in America. I'm sure in other parts of the world as well. Where you can't even afford to rent a home let alone buy one. That's why I feel like the American dream is pretty much dead.

If you have strong parental support, you have a chance. Without that, it is out of reach for most young people.

I am a software developer. I make web apps and hybrid mobile apps. I have been working professionally in this arena for around 4 years now.

I have great parents, but while my dad makes over $150k a year, my parents are separated and my family has struggled with debt for as long as I can remember. I didn't get that boost some parents give their kids. But I don't want to have to be reliable on my parents or grandparents anyways.

wow... is AI hitting the jobs now or just seem like economy slowing down? I've seen some cutbacks here and there. I was once a coder as well, long ago. I hope you can find another job, at once point, they were plentiful.

Makes sense, you want to be independent of parents and grandparents. We are working to help our kids (step kids) a good foundation. It may be more work for you and time to save enough for a house, or make compromises on what you can afford. Of course there's the "get married" route... two are stronger and richer than one. Sorry to hear about your parents, it is unfortunate and expensive to divide everying in two, not to mention the emotional.

Dave Ramsey has good ideas on the issues of debt houses and such, can listen to his show if they passed on any of the issues. You want to be as well, aware of parents situation since you as a child, could end up taking on their estates/assets as they get older. It's good to be educated.

Maybe get job as consultant... and up your skill while there so you are marketable in other areas.

It's about supply and demand. If "no one" can afford a house, sellers will either reduce prices, or wages will increase. If enough houses go unsold, they will reduce.

Locals are being outpriced from all these damn Californians and Yankees moving here. I live in Tennessee where the cost of living is supposed to be cheaper than out west or up north. Prices have skyrocketed here.

Well the bar to succeed has definitely been raised incredibly difficult levels. Working hard and being passionate in one's career most certainly doesn't open doors to success like it used to.
