I wouldn’t even call it competition if that happens. In Seattle, after Covid was over, the city had to close schools down because many kids refused to go back. If school choice was a nationwide thing, the government schools would disappear.

Where will the teachers come from? Will they be paid approximately for the thankless task? Also, a kid in one state will have a completely different education than a kid from another state? Will there be any standard metrics to determine proficiency?

The states pretty much run their own schools anyway. The federal government just withholds federal funds for schools that do not follow their liberal agenda. The state I live in has a standardized test that must be passed before you graduate. It covers basic reading and math skills and some other material. It is not very difficult but after covid it became a problem because online learning was a waste of time. Instead of trying to make up the instruction that the kids did not get they want to just eliminate the test and let everyone graduate. In November their will be a ballot question to eliminate this test. The teachers union has a lot of money so there will be wall to wall commercials on TV to do this. How can somebody who cannot read get a decent job?
