I was a registered Democrat but updated it like 4 days ago to no political party affiliation, now am an independent.

Jesus this is a long one for me…. I’ll summarize to save all our sakes, okay?

I felt as a young teen that Obama didn’t live up to his whole “Yes We Can” wave, there was one politician challenging that… Donald J Trump. He was the strong man for the job who would help the everyday man. I was mainly bitter about the whole not ending the ‘Never Ending War’ which Trump promised American Troops would leave Afghanistan by the end of his 4 yr term which got my attention. I genuinely believed The Wall would fix the southern border like magic & that Mexico would pay for it. He announced a super secret plan to kill off ISIS and all we needed was to support him. I couldn’t vote though I endorsed him to those I knew were legal voting age. I celebrated when Trump was elected, even filmed it on a crappy camcorder at the time….

2020 was rounding the corner and realized, what did Trump achieve?

Has ISIS been wiped out yet? Has Afghanistan ended yet? Why does he tweet so much hate? Was it really necessary to ban the Muslims? (All real questions I asked myself and it caused me to have an identity crisis…. I told people he was the man for us, he had a plan and was looking out for us….)

Covid19 Pandemic: “People are dying that’s true it is what it is” & “This is more deadly…. than… even the… most strenuous flus. I’ve always played it down. Didn’t want to create a panic”. My relative worked in the hospitals rushing to save lives, separated healthy from unhealthy and forced a mask mandate, and people died left & right even a friend of his he knew for years who was in similar age…. It hit me harder once I learned President Obama predicted such a Pandemic hitting our coasts and Donald J Trump revoked in 2018 his Pandemic Playbook which you can read as a PDF which I read while in quarantine….

Vice President Biden was promising the same shit that Trump peddled that it made it easier to convert & gain my political identity back for me personally. Infrastructure, Affordable Care Act Expansions (no longer trying to repeal & kill it that failed prior), Chips And Science Act, Student Loan Relief, Pandemic Relief to families in need, Free Masks & Free Tests, American Rescue Plan, and Leaving Afghanistan In His 4 Yr Term! Passing Pact Act for what his son Beau went through with Cancer from burnpits so no veterans goes through that pain & their families with it…. President Biden I cast my first presidential vote to and now I’m going to cast to Vice President Harris.

On January 6th, 2021 I basically said to my mother who I once endorsed Kamala Harris to…. I will never ever vote for him or politicians that side with him ever again! I’ve held myself to that oath & still will.

Independent. I’m not with the gang shit, first of all. Something about having a declared team when formulating political opinions seems counterproductive, and pressure to follow the “party line.”

I’d say as of recent, I’m more active politically to vote AGAINST stuff, more so than I’m enthused about the alternative, but one side is just THAT off the wall to me right now that it’s more about fending off their attempts to take over shit than it is about advancing a different agenda. The agenda I’m most concerned with pushing is simply “the one that isn’t THAT ONE.”

You’d have to come with something genocidal, or at least a declared-dictatorial kind of thing, as the only other viable alternative (in terms of actually having a chance to win), for me to vote for Trump/a MAGA candidate. If it’s like “Trump or Benito Mussolini?”, then sure, pass me a red hat and some orange Kool-Aid, lmao.

Anyway, that said, I’m not here like “Democrats are here to save the day!”, I’m not naive, haha. Plenty of typical DC bullshit from them too. But on social issues, it’s hard for me to not see them as “the good guys” on almost everything, however extreme a few people might get about it. The normal shit that’s not being stupid for the sake of being deliberately “extra”, I tend to agree with.

They have things I can feel like they’re extra about, but the majority of it seems to be coming from the right place and in the appropriate amount. I think detractors exaggerate a lot of it more than it actually happens in reality.

So, I mean, I could vote Democrat for the rest of my life but stay independent…that depends on Democrats, haha, and even more so on Republicans, if the normal ones ever manage to wrestle it back from the crazies. Or maybe some whole other party pops up that aligns more with my values and priorities, if we’re at a point in time where I feel like MAGA or anything like it has been sufficiently extinguished to a non-threat, and I can go back to voting offensively instead of defensively…. who knows? We’ll see what the future holds. I just can safely say my values will always clash with MAGA’s brand of social positions.

Other than that…. I’m a free agent

I decided to be independent as well. They're both getting on my nerves at this point. Trump had questionable choices in who he works with for example j. d Vance hateful remarks towards women , vance says he wants to raise taxes on people who dont have kids , constant jabs at Latinos which I just don't understand. Kamala, I like her plans but I am tired of her "red carpet " events. All these celebrities she's just coming accross as too Hollywood. I'm not a fan of celebrities especially with the diddy crap going on. I feel most celebs are fake accept j. lo and Whoopi goldberg. I feel they tell it like it is. But anyway I do like kamalas team they're very diverse. I like waltz, stein and I was hoping to see more of occasio. Glad she hopped in the mix when she heard trumps team dissing PR

I was a Democrat in my youth, when that party had a soul and a degree of common sense.
I eventually switched to being a Republican.
As the two-party system is unfortunately ubiquitous in the U. S., an independent vote is essentially no vote at all.
I don't see things changing anytime soon.

Congratulations. I've been an Independent (no party) for years, after initially being a Democrat, growing up in a Democratic family.

Why? I have some liberal beliefs and some conservative beliefs, so neither major party satisfies me. I put myself in the middle, as an Independent.

Independent, I could never support the Republican party, and I left the Democratic party as the DNC doesn't care about the will of the voters and some members/voters have become intolerant of members who doesn't blindly support everything the DNC does.

I never registered with a political party for 1 enormous reason:

McCarthyism is fundamental to human nature.

Once you give yourself a label, you make yourself a target for somebody.

It's the same reason why I won't put bumper stickers on my car and do a lot of other things non-self-identifying.

The problem with such a system is that there's no place for independents, like libertarians. Besides that, behind the red and blue curtains a lot of the same people aren't that different from each other -- it's all run by rich people regardless of their minor differences.

that's a mistake. I did the same but when a primary comes around, you can't vote for much of anyone.  I switch around to the party I want to have more control over in primaries.
