USA does not give long-term hotel stays for illegal immigrants (or legal immigrants). At times when they lack other resources they might resort to employing hotels but that is the exception. Also the immigrants do not receive vacation treatment while staying at the hotels. It is literally just a matter of convenience since hotels are purpose built to accept a lot of people for a temporary stay.

Likewise, when the government or state runs out of their normal resources when helping homeless they also sometimes use hotels. Again, hotels are just the perfect building for the governments needs.

It would be weirder if they commandeered a basketball stadium and started setting up tents in it or something when there already is purpose built buildings nearby ready to be used.

So, if you need to find 1200+ rooms with beds on short notice who do you call first? A hotel is a good bet. The money also had to cover all other expenses such as travel and healthcare. Furthermore, the only reason this was necessary is because there was not enough capacity to accept them in government owned programs which made the need for this emergency measure.

So where do you think that the government did something wrong here? Keep in mind that according to international law the country needs to provide for immigrants seeking asylum during the application processing time. Not finding a bed for these people is literally breaking international law.

International law permits asylum seekers to enter the country using illegal means if they apply for asylum. Since they are explicitly stated as being processed by ICE then they are under international protection and their method of entering the country is swept aside.

That is stupid. Sure, you get to ask them about their situation and potentially deny their claim for asylum but you can only do that once they are being processed. Which means after they have already entered the country and after they have gone into the custody of ICE. Before then they are under the protection of international laws and shooting them would be illegal.

Again, international laws protects them and makes it legal for them to use any means required to enter any country, including illegal means, in the pursuit of asylum applications. You can process them and deny their applications but you can't punish them for entering the country or actually stop them.
