Would you fight/die for your country or would you desert?

Apparently a lot of Ukrainians and a lot of Russians are deserting. Some are just fleeing others are paying their superior officers to leave them alone.

It seems like today people are a lot less enthusiastic to die for a country when they don't feel like a country will do much for them.

Personally I would fight for my country since I feel it is worth fighting for.

But I would also understand people who don't see the reason.

It's not about judgment I'm just asking what you'd do personally :)

To defend my country (or an allied nation) ? Yep, definitely without hesitation.

But for some BS reason to steal resources or oil (Iraq) from another country "to bring them democracy and freedom" (Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Grenada,...) to just steal some more resources and get more military bases in the area or To rebuild the (russian) Empire/soviet union/Warsaw Pact, conquer land for the Kremlin, increase the influence of Moscow or force our will upon other people?

Nope, definitely not. I would not only desert but also help the opponent win by sabotaging my own imperialistic country.

I would basically become a "new Stauffenberg", if the war is for some other reason than defending my country or an allied nation.

It depends on the context and circumstance.

Vietnam War we were believed to be it as a patriotic response against communist expansion after an attack on an American vessel so we strapped on our boots, grabbed our M-16s and went to town…. Though after the whole document leaks to the press, it all backfired and I’m sure a lot of Veterans didn’t like being in the jungles fighting for an hopeless cause & a deceptive cause too.

9/11 we were under attack by a serious terrorist threat of Al Qaeda, we listened for a patriotic message from our Unifying President (voice of reason at the time) George Bush Jr. , we happily served… Though after knowing what we know now also American soldiers being stationed around the world for this ‘War On Terror’, it definitely seems unwanted now by Veterans (though others are patriotically doing it without question, some Veterans stationed away actually criticized Biden wanting to pull them out).

USS Maine, Lusitania, Korean War, etc. all depends on circumstance & situation & my involvement. I could go on with this for time and time again, I honestly don’t have a clear answer because that is how I think and answer.

I wouldn't be the first to volunteer because history shows the most casualties occur in the initial learning phase when politicians and generals are experimenting. Nor would I fight if we were the aggressors.

We only have 1 strategy. Blow up bridges and tunnels, go into the mountains and then shoot at the enemy. So I'm not too worried about the strategy. But I'd probably be drafted a bit later than other guys because I'm already done with military service and I'm not in the age group that they'd take first. I'm sure they'd come for me soon but not immediately.

I don't think anyone really wants to invade the USA, but if they're dumb enough to do so they probably shouldn't come to Florida. We have the highest per capita veteran population in the country. All of my neighbors shoot pretty much daily and you're basically walking into a jungle warfare scenario with alligator infested swamps, tons of poisonous snakes and spiders, mosquito, fire ants, saw palmetto everywhere, shark infested oceans, panthers, lots of rain and humidity, sweltering heat, and bacteria that will eat you alive. When you're not from here it's a challenging environment to operate in. To put it in perspective, Ranger School's final phase is dubbed swamp phase... It's a Florida thing... For us it's just home.

We do have mosquitoes but that's about it. The environment is a lot less hostile or annoying so I'm happy to stay here :)

I mean I would get out of it due to medical reasons. I would actually fight if we were invaded if I didn't have my medical reasons.

The government, has it's bad points but in reality if it wasn't for them I wouldn't get any money and I wouldn't be able to live as a I do without a job. So their system has been good to me, even if it is flawed and was flawed by them. Most other countries wouldn't help as such.
