It pretty much boils down to the fact that some amount of the country has spent their entires lives being lied to that unlimited and unquestioning generosity makes them morally superior people. They categorically refuse to believe that they were being stolen from. And they categorically refuse to believe that the rest of the world couldn't function without them spending shitloads of money.

And here's the most disturbing part; they've also convinced themselves these solipsistic beliefs somehow line up with Christianity. It would be comical if there wasn't such an intense religious fervor about it. It's very difficult to convince someone that they've been lied to.

They genuinely believed that the US, as a country had reached a societal high point, and that our money is essential to ensuring that the rest of the world is a better place.

Then Donald Trump comes around and starts pointing out how bad things really are, and these people REALLY didn't want to hear.

Trump is a clown-master in naming problems and trying to implement completely idiotic solutions for them. You can't just start a massive tariffs war and then expect domestic production to develop. To build up domestic supply and production chains reliably you need five to ten years, during which time you still need foreign suppliers.
