It's not impossible but if earth is to be destroyed by the sun then likely so will mars. He's mad to put humans on Mars, we probably should be doing that. Was listening to Neil Tyson Degrassi and he was talking about how the Space Race virtually is responsible for every modern piece of technology we have today. Like there is more computing power in your smart phone than was available to NASA in the 80s.
As for climate change in regards to pollution that is akin to using the well you drink out of as a toilet, not a good idea. Climate change is very real, we should try to have as little impact on the climate as we can but its important to recognise that the climate is not fixed and that we have just had a long period of a very mild climate. This may change with something as simple as a volcanic eruption in Iceland which could potentially cause a volcanic winter which would blow out the sun for a year or decades, followed by earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, tidal waves and other extreme weather that's beyond out control. There's also solar flares, the disruption of the Gulf stream and other similar systems. Solar flares and asteroid impacts.
Civilisation has fallen before and likely will do again. Not a question of if but when. If we are lucky its not in our lifetime.
