Why do cowboys still exist?

They were slave owners. They still are , just with animals. Plus they look ridiculous. Especially When wearing a giant fat indoors.

Are you saying that riding horses or using them to pull carriages or wagons is slavery? That was the only form of transportation for thousands of years before the automobile. And was the automobile an environmental improvement?

There are still many ranches in the western U. S. - some privately owned and some huge corporate operations. There are over 876 million acres of ranch and other farmland in the U. S., which makes up 39% of the total U. S. land. Under Obama, the government was trying to drive out many private ranchers in order to mine the areas.

Some privately owned ranches have begun managing their cattle in a way that restores and improves biodiversity, health of the land and riparian regions by moving cattle in a way that mimics the way herds of bison, elk and deer used to graze. It is labor intensive but pays off.
Degraded land that is left fallow doesn't restore itself.
Unfortunately, the USDA and BLM still teach traditional cattle management practices that cause environmental degradation.

Raising and managing cattle isn't cruel. Factory farms, feed lots and slaughter houses are cruel.

I know people who raise herds of grass-fed beef and treat their animals very humanely. I also know lots of people who have horse ranches or own horses and ride for recreation. Those animals couldn't be treated better.
It's true that the people involved wear suitable clothing - demim pants, riding boots, brimmed hats, and sometimes chaps. They look like cowboys.

Farming and ranching is good honest work. I would say that it is far more wholesome and healthy than sitting in an office in a city.

Farmers and ranchers love nature and the outdoors. They also love independence. That's why they do what they do and work so hard.

I'll admit that I am not into cowboy fashion with neatly pressed jeans, western shirts, big belt buckles, fancy cowboy boots, and crisp, spotless cowboy hats. And I'm not into modern country music played by guys from Chicago or New York who sing about pick up trucks and corn fields with a southern twang in their voice and backed by a peddle steel guitar.

True cowboys, however, don't dress for show. Their clothing is practical. It is made to stand up to hard work and last under harsh conditions.

Most cowboys are ranch hands/employees. They work hard, rounding up and herding cattle, mending fences, etc. Their job is to keep cattle safe and healthy.

I don't think that lifestyle will ever die out in the Americas. I hope it doesn't. It is an important part of our culture. It is the kind of hard work, determination, independence, self-reliance and grit that symbolizes America.

Are you vegan? Do think raising back yard chickens for eggs is slavery? I have heard vegans say such things.

Cowboys still exist because moving cattle on horseback is still efficient and raising beef for food is still a viable way to make a living.

But the cowboy look and style is popular here in the USA because a lot of guys identify with the romantic notion of the cowboy life and the hat and boots are a fashion statement that becomes an identity for them.

I was born in Texas but never worked as a cowboy. But my grandfather wore a Stetson and I wore nothing but boots until about age 10 or 12. Today I own 5 pair of boots and 4 Stetsons. I get a lot of stares in the NY Metro Area, LOL. I don't care. The boots are really comfy and easy on/off. The hats are useful in bad weather. And they bring back memories of my childhood.

There are more active ranches in large parts of the U. S. than there have ever been, even in the Old West. Even though these are owned by huge corporate conglomerates now, they still need the rank and file cowboys to control the millions of cattle. Culturally, it's like saying to Canada why don't you get rid of the RCMP.

They were slave owners. They still are.  Bullshit.   Historically, Cowboys were never slave owners. They moved out West to avoid that. And many cowboys were black. Without cowboys, here would be no beef cattle. Without cowboys there would be no horses. Methinks you are ignorant and hateful. And cowboys do not wear fat indoors. But they will wear a hat.

Cowboy are as American as apple pie. Even of there were no cows there would still be cowboys. It is not so much an occupation as it is a state of mind.

Man leave the cowboys alone 😂 from my experience they're usually kind to their animals.  Cowboys are just American culture. The same reason bull runners still exist in Spain
