I think this has been raised before and my view hasn't changed.

First there was a general moral failure to check Germany e. g. Neville Chamberlain 'Peace in our time'. The US waited for Germany to declare war on it after Pearl Harbor. France wasn't the only country that was reluctant to refight WWI.

Whether Versailles armament provision could have been enforced I'll leave to a what-if. Objections were made but nothing further than that.

My main point is that there was a broad Allied failure that included but was not limited to France.

Unfortunately German doctrine was far superior to French and British doctrine. Tank for tank French & British tanks were far superior - except for wireless communication - but they were distributed whilst Germany concentrated their's.

The great French failure was in the gov't cabinet and that can't be attributed to the French people as a whole.

Again it becomes a big what-if had a different course been taken. Obviously had a section of France been held and was non-Vichy the course would have been far different but only after German U boats were broken in the timeline that that did happen in.

Overall the what-ifs are impossibly big and it is not plausible to attribute failure to the French people/army as the image suggests.

France fell because of government incompetence not cowardice. I doubt you'll find any military reports of the time that put the defeat down to it.

The idea is a much later American one. One designed to both diminish Frances role in the war of independence and bolster their own post ww2 image.

First of all, you have to understand where you heard that from. And then that should tell you the rest of the story It's 6 that was even printed. It's sick that somebody even printed it to make a name for themselves It is a start a long time ago , but we're going to start seeing a lot of this stuff Media is evil in media is going to go out of their ways to put down people to make people angry, to try to give everybody to do something, it's not right.

The French are not cowards. The United States would not exist if the French had not come to the rescue during the American Revolution.

In world war one and two, though, France's military strategy was less than ideal. Who would have thought that the way to break through the Maginot Line would be to go around it?

Don't know. they held their own at times in history. I suspect it's more an issue of lack of investment, passivity and when there's a blitzkrieg... they are out gunned. same for polish in WWII.

No, I don't. Just as I don't think that the Germans were the superhuman soldiers of WW2. France had a weak and old military leadership and a false security with the Maginot line.

No it’s just a joke.
I have known a few French people that seemed to have less mental fortitude or what Americans would consider weak mental fortitude. It might have been more of a cultural difference but I didn’t explore it enough at the time.
