Is a hybrid of socialism and regulated capitalism our best economic system now?

There is a strong case that it is among the best economic arrangements we currently know how to operate.

Capitalism is extraordinarily good at decentralized decision-making, innovation, productivity, investment, and responding to consumer demand. Its weakness is that, left largely unchecked, it can also produce monopoly power, extreme inequality, financial instability, exploitation, and situations in which essential services are distributed according to ability to pay rather than need.

Socialist or social-democratic mechanisms can address some of those failures through universal or broadly accessible healthcare and education, social insurance, progressive taxation, worker protections, infrastructure investment, and regulation of monopoly and environmental harms. But when government replaces markets too extensively—particularly in ordinary production and pricing—it can lose the information and incentives that competitive markets provide.

So the attractive combination is something like:

Competitive private markets for most goods and services.
Strong antitrust enforcement and sensible regulation, rather than either laissez-faire or micromanagement.
Public provision or heavy public support where markets predictably perform poorly—healthcare, basic education, infrastructure, basic scientific research, and a social safety net.
Progressive taxation, but not so punitive that it seriously discourages productive investment and entrepreneurship.
Protection of private property and contracts, accompanied by meaningful labor protections and constraints on concentrated economic power.
The Scandinavian economies are frequently invoked as examples, although they're sometimes inaccurately called socialist. They are fundamentally capitalist market economies with relatively large welfare states, strong institutions, substantial redistribution, and extensive public services.

I'm personally sick of the right wing referring to anything that is even a little bit socialistic as being "communism". I'm also sick of the left wing referring to anything that involves capitalism as being "fascist". That kind of labeling is just destructive and divisive and unnecessary.
