A major reason is that for many committed MAGA supporters, the question is no longer simply whether a particular Trump statement is factually true. Trump has become bound up with political identity, group loyalty, distrust of opposing institutions, and a sense that he represents them against hostile elites. Once that happens, admitting that he lies can feel less like acknowledging an ordinary defect in a politician and more like conceding something to an opposing group.

There is good psychological research behind this. Partisan motivated reasoning causes people to scrutinize unwelcome information much more aggressively than information favorable to their side. This is not unique to MAGA or even to conservatives; experiments find it among Democrats as well. A 2025 Stanford study, for example, found that both Trump supporters and opponents were substantially more willing to believe even absurd claims when those claims favored their political side.

But there is an additional phenomenon that I think is particularly important with Trump: some supporters recognize that an assertion is literally false and nevertheless do not regard that as disqualifying. Research published in 2024 found that partisan voters sometimes excuse a politician's false statement because they believe it expresses a more important underlying or “deeper” truth about the world. The effect occurred on both sides, although the Trump examples were especially revealing: a supporter may effectively think, perhaps that particular statistic isn't true, but what Trump is saying about immigration/crime/the establishment is basically true, so the factual error doesn't matter.

Trump has also spent years attacking the referees who might establish that he is wrong—journalists, government agencies, scientists, election officials, judges, and fact-checkers. Consequently, contradictory evidence can become self-sealing: CNN says Trump lied → CNN hates Trump → therefore CNN's accusation proves nothing. Research on election misinformation has even found circumstances in which warning labels attached to Trump's claims failed to reduce belief among his supporters; among politically knowledgeable Trump voters, disputed labels could sometimes produce a backlash rather than correction.

There is also a fairly ordinary psychological mechanism involved: cognitive dissonance. If someone has spent ten years defending Trump, voted for him repeatedly, argued with relatives about him, donated money, attended rallies, and regarded his opponents as dishonest, saying “Trump habitually lies” creates a much larger problem than admitting that one politician told a falsehood. It invites the uncomfortable follow-up: Then why have I trusted him all this time? Human beings are extraordinarily good at avoiding conclusions that threaten an important part of their self-conception.

And there is an important distinction between “Trump has lied” and “Trump is a liar.” Plenty of MAGA voters will acknowledge individual exaggerations. They may call them jokes, hyperbole, negotiating tactics, trolling, mistakes, or Trump “being Trump.” What they resist is the characterological conclusion that systematic dishonesty should undermine his credibility. That allows each falsehood to be treated as an isolated exception rather than evidence about the reliability of the speaker.

That distinction becomes increasingly difficult to maintain because the sheer volume of documented false or misleading statements during Trump's political career is extraordinarily large; independent fact-checking organizations have catalogued thousands of them.

So I wouldn't explain it simply by saying “MAGA people are gullible.” That misses what is psychologically interesting about it. Some undoubtedly believe particular falsehoods. Others know Trump exaggerates or lies but discount the importance of factual truth when it conflicts with loyalty, political objectives, or what they regard as a larger truth. Still others have become so distrustful of outside sources that there is effectively no mutually accepted authority capable of demonstrating that Trump lied.

That last situation is probably the most consequential. Political disagreement is manageable when two people disagree about values. It becomes much harder when they no longer agree on how a factual proposition can be established at all.
