How would you respond when someone asks you how much something expensive of yours cost?

They're expensive instruments and I feel a bit awkward when someone asks me how much it costs.

How would you answer if someone asked you something like this?

Also, my teacher and the man at the shop are worried about me not having enough money. I have a lot of money saved and plan to reinvest after buying the harp. The man at the shop asked me how much, and I didn't want to tell him. I just said, "I have enough to buy this harp, and enough for me while I'm applying for jobs".

It feels awkward. Do you feel awkward if someone asks you how much your car cost?

I feel EXTREMELY awkward when people ask how much something of mine cost. The thing is, I often get the sense that it's more than pure curiosity and it's about them trying to get a feel for my financial situation. They're trying to discreetly see if I'm rich or not

I would just avoid the question and continue asking questions

I think it's a selling technique. DON'T tell them how much you have. If they know how much you have, they'll try to sell something more expensive to you than you'd *need* or want.

That's true! I didn't think about that. However, he seemed quite honest. He was trying to encourage me to go to a cheaper harp (which I know is good) until I decide whether I want to play the lever or pedal.

I don't really mind it, but there's a difference between innocent curiosity and prying into someone's business, trying to figure out their financial situation. Like, now that you mention it, I have no idea how much a harp costs haha, so I'd totally be curious, but it's about that, not the person's personal life... The example you mentioned, the weird concern like, "oh my, can you really afford it? what will you do? how much is your rent?" is noooot necessary.

That's true. It isn't. It's just that I'm a graduate and my teacher knows I'm looking for a job. Also, I look younger than I am, so the person at the shop probably thought I had just finished school lol.

I think they're worried that I'm not thinking it through properly.

Well, harps are between 1,000-90,000 pounds. The one I'm buying is a beginner's harp and costs 4,000 pounds. I'm not sure where you're from, but that's about the price of a new car for a young driver.

Wow, that IS quite the investment. But the thing is, I would just think, "Well this person must really want this," not "What an irresponsible purchase." People care too much :P If it's not your finances, it's your sex life, your diet, your physical activity, your career choice, your dating life...

Haha thank you that's true. And I don't waste my money. I chose a car based on how economical it is with petrol and I invested most of my student loan. Plus, playing the harp could be an investment because it's difficult to find a teacher and it would be nice to teach one day in the far future!

I tend to just laugh it off and say a lot, make a joke out of it. That tends to get people off your case, if they ask again, it sounds like they are just trying to pry.

I don't care if someone knows how much something I have costs. I was told as a child that it was rude to ask, but I don't believe that. People are just too sensitive. So what if they find out? Unless you have been asking them for money, they shouldn't get upset that you bought something.

The simplest answer when someone asks is to politely ask if they're interested in buying one? If not, it doesn't matter. If they are then its a more reasonable question.

That's interesting. I would feel awkward. I think it's because when I started my investments, my parents kept telling me not to let people know.

If someone asked me how much my car cost, I'd likely say I don't I stole it 15 minutes ago, I'll sell it to you cheap. =P I think it's rude to talk about money in almost any circumstance though.
