Republicans aren't as naive as you think and will not forget this obvious trick by republican leaders. They will demand something else of substance or they won't show up to vote.
It will take just another week or two of no one mentioning it and then republicans will wilfully forget because they know speculation about brown people coming for a handout is their only chance.
It will be hard for republicans to forget because they care passionately about it and so will need right wing media to tell them over and over to believe something else before they can do it.
