Are martial arts classes better simulated or competitive?

Would you rather attend a martial arts class where sparring is simulated with light-medium contact strikes, and with head and groin guards worn, where the fight is practiced very safely? Or would you rather a class where sparring is full contact strikes, with no head or groin guards, that simulates a more ‘real life’ experience, but at the risk of greater injury?

I love how my martial arts class practices full contact strikes, and without head and groin guards, meaning your training reflects a more ‘real life’ situation. Also allowing girls to take on guys provides for a greater variation and more practical training.

So which kind of class would you rather attend? How does your current class practice it’s sparring sessions? And which way is better do you think? Thank you.
