It should be called soccer.
If you look at the etymology of soccer and learn the collective history of all forms of football, you will learn why it should be "soccer".
"Soccer" was the early nickname that the English gave for "association football" which was invented in England. "Soccer" comes from "asSOCiation". "Soccer" was used by the English to differentiate it from "gridiron football" - which is the catchall name for sports like rugby, Australian rules football, and football as in North America.
However, in England, gridiron football faded in popularity, but association football did not. Since association football was the only form of football that was popular and in the public discourse, the term "soccer" was replaced simply with "football". And the English used that throughout the empire.
But, in North America, gridiron football became the dominant sport. So, it was simply called "football". But, also, in North America, the original English nickname of "soccer" for association football was never replaced, thus it is still called "soccer" in North America and a few other places.
Realistically, "association football" should remain as "football" because it is just too difficult to change everything. However, "football" in North America is never going to revert to "gridiron football" especially since we have a perfectly good name for association football anyway: "soccer".
Thus, the status quo will hold until one of those sports dies off.
Well π£ okay, but you have to agree American Football should not be called just Football? They could have shorted it another way?
No, I don't agree. I could make the same case - and, in fact, I did - that association football fans should drop "football" and revert to the original shortened name "soccer".
Basically, both sides have equal weight to calling their sport "football".
The thing is that "gridiron football", such as American football, never had any other nickname.
"Association football" did: "soccer".
So, it would have been best if "gridiron football" was just called "football" and "association football" just be called by its original nickname: "soccer".
Alright. Agree to disagree. I appreciate you taking your time explaining your side!πππ»
I'm American, and even I think it should be called "football".
It's seriously the most perfect name for anything, ever, and the fact that we call it "soccer" makes absolutely zero sense to me.
Thank you! I never thought I would hear that from an American!π
To be fair, I'm not much of a sports aficionado, so I don't have any particular attachment to the names, or the spirts, in general.
Just seems to me that if the sport is about kicking the ball with your FOOT, then FOOTball would be the appropriate name.
But nope; we decide to reserve that name for the sport that most involves carrying/throwing the ball, 'cause 'Murica π
Ugh, typos. π‘
Yeah I agree. In American Football they barely evan use the feet. If anything its closer to rugby.

just hearing soccer is urgh - and i just find it weird that it's the most popular sport in the world, yet no as popular in america but they still changed it to 'soccer' and their American football is 'American football' when their football is more like rugby
Agree! Its more like rugby. It shouldn't evan be called footballπ
The Americans are ridiculous
@DarkLegacy yupπ no logic
Soccer is originally a British term. As an American, I'm gonna keep calling it soccer because that's what I'm used to and because we already have a sport called football. But, and this is a big but, if you are able to come up with a better term for football that we actually like I am willing to switch.
But calling American Football makes no sense. You use hour hands not your feet.π
Alright thank youππ»
Americans call their "sport" American football, when it should be called "arm egg" (sic) instead.
Americans have a habit of butchering language and understanding. They are Spanish speaking, mixed race people at heart after all.
they don't just do it with language, they do it with food, festivals etc
I don't think it makes a huge difference - In countries where soccer/football is more popular , they use the term "Football" - In other countries for example "Football" is associated with a more popular sport like "American Football" then the term "Soccer" is used.
It is played with the feet, so obviously it should be called football.

The word 'soccer' is offensive to English ears.
Yeah we say Football tooπ
Especially since we don't have a good reason why we call what we call football, we thought it might be the length of the ball, but it is actually 14 inches.

How horrible! People use different words in different countries. Never mind that there are millions and millions of words that are different. For some reason this particular word gets people upset.
Well said
I think they should call it a Foot Soccer Ball & leave it at that.
It's called "boring" and also "annoying" in my world.
Thank goodness my soccer-loving son moved out today.
ππyeah i dont really care for it either
In a century where everything is verbally re-defined, new words could be found.
So heads, arms or chests no longer feel discriminated or offended by not being included.
My suggestion: ''HFLCA+ bodyball''
I don't like the word soccer so I go with football.
I use football because in my country's language we called football.
Same:)
@Sakuratanaka Which country is that.
@jjj101010 turkey
Don't worry about making them mad, it annoys me that they change the name of our sports but it annoys me more when we British and the rest of the world (but especially the British) also call it soccer. It is football
Here's why we call it soccer here.
https://time.com/5335799/soccer-word-origin-england/
Definitely makes more sense to call it football. I wonder how it all got messed up? Either way football (soccer) is one of the worst sports.
@jjj101010 Lowest scoring game. With a bunch of drama queens taking injuries. The sport that needs a huge update. Old rules make this game so boring to watch. You basically watch people run back and forth. It's sad, it could be a more action packed game. Oh and the fans are the worst too. They beat up and even kill opposing team fans..
Americans are not the only ones who call it soccer. Most of the rest of the world outside of Europe call it soccer
What countries are you refering too outside US?
Football, lol. But I thought football and soccer were slightly different?
Um what π
Sir, this is Wendyβs-
@NYlatefun Bruh wtf
I assume American Football
I called it diving at some point... it got quite ridiculous
I think what would we call American football then if we named soccer football. Also it's pronounced and spelled differently so I hate people make this topic a big deal.
I'm just used to calling it soccer so I'll stick with that.
We already have football in USA, so I'll call it soccer.
Football.
Americans call "football" something you play with your hands, which is not accurate.
Football makes sense, but us Canadians still call it soccer
No. You could call it anything you like. Unless the bleachers collapse and half of Europe dies we're still not going to watch.
Soccer should be Football while Football should be Handball.
Or maybe Armball sounds better
It is football, soccer is a shorting of the word association as the full name is association football.
I'll go with football.
football cos that's what 99% of the world calls it
Because Football in America is another sport.
Football!!
πππ»
Meanwhile...
Americans : lol nice try
football all the way
ππ»ππ»
Donβt care. Iβd like to do away with both.

It's called soccer β½οΈ
Soccer β½οΈ it is
Bet you Iβm gonna still call it soccer 💀
And how are you going to make Americans mad lol? Wouldnβt the people who actually call it FΓΊtbol be the ones that are mad?
Well it does not take much to upset Americans
Who are you again? π
Nothing I said or asked makes me upset but okay lol
It seems like you got a problem that I call it soccer and you ainβt gonna do anything about it
I almost wanna laugh cause someone from Sweden and someone from the United Kingdom really thinks that Americans care about this. Itβs going to take a lot more to make me upset. You calling it football and not soccer doesnβt make me upset or mad π
