My Xbox one died and now I'm just left with my old consoles from the 16 bit era and an N64. Why is newer technology less reliable?

I have a SNES, a Sega Genesis and a Nintendo 64. The genesis is over 30 years old!

Many reasons.

But in your case it's probably because you played the Xbox more, and for longer periods than your old stuff and didn't maintain it. Your Xbox can probably be repaired too.

You seem to be forgetting that the power in your xbox is more than all those old tech consoles. Hence in effect you were running something all those consoles together couldn't match.

Thus it's not a case of "less reliable" but "more power in less space". Meaning you have more than you ever had before, but know a lot less about it.

I repair computers for a living. The point is that compared to the older hardware, it can't last the distance. The machines have increased in power and ability but not in durability. There has been no investment into that. There has into the controllers. The controllers of the old systems have had to be repaired or replaced multiple times but not the ones for the newer systems. So it is possible to make more durable hardware but it isn't being done. I've played the older systems way more than the Xbox one I had.

To get you to buy the new model. They dont make money if they never fail.

Why do you think 50 year old cars are still on the road because today cars are throw away cars. You only get if your lucky maybe 15 to 20 years out of them.

You won't find a 2015 car in a classic car show. Because they were not built to last.

Best sample is. I have this 1974 chevy truck. Drive it all the time. In the winter and summer year round. All I do is tune ups and it keeps going.

Now in the same time I ownd that truck in the last 20 plus. I replaced about 10 newer cars. Todays cars and trucks are just crap. They are made to fail after 10 years. That just enough time for you have that high intrest car loan paid off. Now you got another loan, brcause you need a new car.

More complicated the things, the more ways things can go wrong I guess. Plus there might be other factors like heating issues, you might also have played with x box longer so that might be a cognitive bias (playing it's role no?)

Do you think I could've played something I had for 2 years longer than something I had for 30? It's not like I only played short games like street fighter etc either. I've mostly used it to play games which require hours and hours of dedication like the Phantasy Star and Shining Force games as well as others like it. I even used to play it in the morning and pause it where I was up to, go to school, come back and play it for the rest of the day. So the machine would've been running in excess of 12 hours straight at a time.
