So many good answers to this. I really like flat panel displays. They are big and bright, don't emit all the x-rays the CRT displays did, they are lighweight and hang on a wall and they really are not that expensive anymore.

My home brewed desktop PC's. Not the fastest, maybe by a long way, but built for what I need.

why did you go the custom route?

@exitseven As a student, I could not afford the sort of machine I wanted from a retail outlet. So I started with the cheapest bits I could find, including used parts. Gradually upgraded all the components as finances permitted. Use Ubuntu Linux because it is free, as is all the software.

Built a second machine along the same lines, again using Ubuntu. Changed the OS on the original to Windows XP. It is always off-line! Run old software on it, and use it as an archive for music, photos and vids etc.

@Jessica405 That is pretty impressive. I teach a computer hardware class and want to build a video server as a class project this fall. That is if the course actually runs this time.
