In theory it’s a good way to instantly communicate ideas and start of up conversations. In reality, Twitter is just a collection of the worst, angriest, most toxic people imaginable spewing venom at each other.

I definitely do not recommend starting a Twitter account

Get an account and take it for a test spin. Don't divulge who you are, because no one needs to know that. Twitter is no different than GAG and the people who tell you not to get an account, aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. Are there good things on Twitter? Yes. Are there bad things on Twitter? Yes. It's no different than this site.
Don't listen to me or anyone else, just try it for a week. You can pull the plug whenever you want.
